What is a good, safe shutdown temp for the turbo?, I,m talking pre-turbo probe... .

It depends as the turbo cools more slowly than the ex gases pre turbo. If you install a post turbo pyro you will know when it reaches 300* and will save a $1200- turbo. Dont loose that pre turbo pyro or you won't know when to back out of the throttle and save the $10,000- engine.

I know I'll Hear backlash on this but don't sweat the cooldown time. If it's not after a long pull with a heavy load or running at high speed then I would just let it idle down for a couple of minutes. The cooldown time on the turbo is to avoid coking of the oil in the bearings and cartridge assy. I'm more concerned with letting the temperatures in the motor stabilize than of the turbo. I dont always wait for 300 degrees post-turbo before I shut her down. $1200 for a turbo, I dont think so. Majestic Turbo in Waco Tx. has rebuilt a couple for me and at $285 a pop I'm not going to worry about it.

I truly believe that 90% of the people who own turbos don't even wait 10 seconds to shut it off. One of my neighbors shuts off his PSD immediately, even after towing his big boat home. 5 years and doesn't seem to have a problem. Everyone I have seen with a CTD, except for a couple of guys, shuts off their truck like it was a non turbo gasser. I know they have been probably doing this from day one and for 5 years or longer. Never had to replace a turbo. Our turbos can take a lot more hot shutdowns without damage that you would think. I usually wait till 300 degrees pre turbo or 2 min. , which ever is longer.

Koa Man,
I agree, I bought the Cummins because of its durability. . Another reason is thatI have a lot of fellow contractors that have same. . IAC, these people, for the most part, are not gearheads, and they pullin, shut down, and run... . couldn't care less about coking... My ex would drive nothing but Volvos, finally I talked her into a Turbo, Lasted 3 years as a soccer mom car, so I'm a little more conservative now... I'll let it cool down... .....

I wait until it's 300 degrees after a long run or towing. When I pull in the driveway after coming home from work(14 mile trip one way) the gauge usually sets on 300. I usually wait. It's worth it. I see people just start them up and shut them down like they're gassers. To each his own, but if you're gonna treat a diesel like a gasser, why not save the money and get a gasser. #ad

Cummins Power, don't leave home without it

I have to agree with John Berger. If I have been pulling hard, I will wait until the temp (after turbo)is 300-350 F. If I have just been running around and not pulling, I will shut it off when temp gets to 400 F.

I have a 88' Dodge Shadow with turbo that has over 140,000 miles and I have also let it cool down after running fast. I do use the Amsoil lubes, and they do help as the oil will take much higher temps without breaking down. this will decrease "cokeing" around the bearings in the turbo.
