I got my prototype from the machine shop. Preliminary tests show higher boost at partial throttle, and faster turbo spool up... . I can not give you a time to achieve full boost since I do not have a data logger. But I can tell you there is 1 psi at idle, 2 psi at 1200 rpm under compression, and 3 psi at 2000rpm under compression. I have an Ashcroft 0-30 psi gage . 5psi increments I will be hooking up once the aluminum piece is done. The engine also seems more responsive at lower rpm's. A 60 to 90 6th gear WOT run showed only 900F for EGT. Ambient air temp was 52F with no wind on a level road. Turbo noise is almost absent compared to the stock turbo without the silencer ring. You do not even know the turbo is there untill 15 psi, and even then you have to strain to hear it. I will be doing WOT testing once I have an aluminum one that can withstand the heat. So far it is looking good! In case you want to know my truck is a 2001 ETH DEE QC SB 4x4 3. 55 gears 35" tires, 3"lift 275 injectors, boost module and elbow set for 30 psi max boost.

Sounds like a pretty cool idea. I used to like hearing the turbo... even had the ring out for a while, but now the "fun" is over and I'd be interested in what you're designing. Even with the ring in it's too loud now. Except when I give someone else a ride. #ad

Cdaledh, make sure you secure it good! I didn't think it could go anywhere, so I put some Lexel on it and let it set up overnight. The turbo sneezes still blew it into the hose and it turned crosswise. That's when I put the setscrews in! Craig

I am not worried about it comming off... it secures to the outside of the housing... where the hose attaches. I do have a drawing. It is on CAD release 14. The aluminum piece will cost me $500 to have it CNC machined from billet 5" round bar.

the tolerance around the housing is . 005" and I will be using an "O" ring between the cone and the housing to prevent the admission of foreign particles. the stock air hose fits on the end of the cone... there is about . 25" clearance between it and the alternator.

I have my piece of stock setting in the garage. I am waiting for some time to work on the lathe, in between making parts for my '26 IHC and helping my son rebiuld the engine in his CJ 7.
Did you use a single angle?

wow, gee wiz. .

I remember when I got BLASTED by the BIG BOYS for saying it'll run better with something in there to smoothen out the airflow. . I'll be darned...

Nice job CD...

Any chance of getting some dyno numbers with and without your new part? Will you be selling these? How long is the waiting list?

We just tested an inlet ring simular to that today (no nozzle though) on Edge's dyno. Guess what?? Absolutely no difference over the stock ring in power or boost. Didn't check for EGTs though. It may help there.

these turbo's all have what is called "bleed air" by putting that gismo in you will be loosing the bleed air effect and your egt could quite possibly go up in stead of down Im not a fan of anything restricting the airflow into the turbo from tractor pulling we have found that nothing in the way works best my . 02

Bleed Air? sounds like some sort of recirculation from discharge back to the inlet internal to the housing (like a recirculation line on a centrifugal pump)... . would make discharge temp go up. As for restriction, there is none.
Also, adding more air to a diesel engine does not make more power..... The cone is designed to reduce turbo lag, and provide a convienent place to introduce N2O or C3H8 into the engine without drilling any holes. the most effective way to add power is to modify the fuel curves with either a box or injectors.
The HX-40 adds power only because it takes less turbine drive pressure to generate high boost, (lets the engine breathe easier at high power levels and RPM) and it also allows more aggressive fueling because of that fact... . lower back pressure on the engine.
I actually saw a slight drop in egt with the prototype UHMW cone (50F), but do to safety concerns I have had to wait until now to do some extended duration full load testing.

The cone Bart is talking about was supplied by me to the Edge for testing and as Bart said there was no recordable gain on the Dyno. I have had one in mine for about a month and my milage is up by . 3 MPG and I do see 1 PSI high boost. 38 to 39PSI. On the down side it dropped the noise from my PSA(wife liked this) and I can now hear the turbo back wash when shifting.

Finished mine and installed it tonight. Response seems alittle better. Alot better than running with no ring, wich is the way I drove the last day so I could get some final dimensions. The turbo noise is definitly different. I made my ring using the shape of a velocity stack or venturi, rather than a single angle cone. I checked with an engineer and that was his rcommendation for a better flow. If anybody is interested I will post some photos.

I get almost no noise from the turbo except when shifting or backing off the throttle also... . sounds like someone is depressurizing an air line in the airbox. I used a single angle cone for ease of manufacture. now I just need to put my Dad's Massey Furgeson 360 4x4 front end loader on the trailer and tow it around for a month
