Turbo Silencer Ring?

Craig, are you planning on attending the Denver Chapter meeting on Sunday? I've been trying to draw up a new turbo silencer on CAD using your numbers and am having a bit of trouble. If I figure it out I'll try to email you the drawing as a picture.

Pete - If you remember, bring what you have make with autocad, I would like to check it out. I have a buddy that I work with that used to do animation in CAD so maybe we can get his assistance.

Craig - I agree with the other guys. . if you have time can you take some pics? If you are going to come to the meeting, let me know and I will bring my digital camera and post of some pics for everyone to see.

Kevin, I'd be happy to bring what I've got drawn up. Do you want a copy on disk, or just a hard copy? If you want it on disk, what format (ie . dwg)? The problem I'm having is not with working the software, but getting the numbers that Craig posted to agree. I've got something drawn now that looks fairly reasonable, but I need to look at the turbo inlet on my truck to confirm.

I have a kid in the machine shop program at school that is going to make me a velocity stack for the front of my turbo. I am going to have him leave the housing the same size as the outside that will keep it in the turbo. What angle should have him make to inside?

Pcorssmit, I didn't know there is a Denver chapter, let alone a meeting Sun. . Where and when is it? Kwikkurt, I just e-mailed pics to K arts to post for me and asked if he can tape the sound and get it on the site. D Duncan, can you check to see if the cad program knows how to do the correct design for a blower inlet if you gave it some guidelines to start with. I'd ask our cad girl at work but she screws up everything she does! I don't have all my ASHRAE books yet but I could probably borrow the right one from our engineer if there was no other way. Metal tech, a cnc lathe would be perfect and make them with the right contours! Dee, I made mine 30 degrees to keep the length down and it's still about 1/2" longer than the inlet collar. I think that's everybody! I guess i'll be seeing some of you Sun. if the meeting materializes! I just put on a Walker 21471 and shortened everything up so I could run the pipe out ahead of the tire - took half a day to build the tailpipe with a six gore rolling offset. It looks cute but I'm not sure I like the sound yet! Craig

I think the 600CFM theory is pretty far off. Just to let you know the turbo on my old chrysler conquest was a larger aftermarket turbo that was rated at 555CFM at 15psi. That Turbo was maybe hald the size of the holeset(sp?) on the cummins truck. So i imagine at 30+ PSI that 600cfm would be toast #ad
Anyone know the CFM rating on the holeset?

Just a thought regarding the length and general design. If you look at any fuel injection manifold, and most ported carb manifolds, any area where air needs to make a turn is radiused. I believe that a sharp edge doesn't let the air "bend" and slows down flow. I also seem to remember that 7 or 15deg taper works well, BUT when you don't have the room do what ya can. FYI, all of my experience comes from drag race gas engines, diesels are new to me.

Guys, I really like where this is headed. Looks like you'all have found a unexploited area to gain additional performance.

For C Schomer, Craig, what about that AF942M air filter. What't it's intended applicatin, where do you get one, and how much does it cost? I think that may be the filter for me.

I just found the biggest MF in a Fleetguard book that would fit! IHC has a good stock - they must use it in something($38). You have to build a round collar for the hose! Craig

Moparguy, this is a replacement element intended for engine air filtration. God only knows who all uses it. I picked this one because it's a long life filter - it's made with more media than a normal element which gives it more dust holding capacity and lower initial resistance than a normal element. Fleetguard told me it's 98. 5% initial efficiency - measured with a standard dust mixture used for auto filter testing. It sounded just like the ASHRAE filter test! Tests with a magnahelic showed that it makes a K&N in the stock box look like a plug! Craig

Anyone who makes a TSR better check the dimensions of their inlet. The ones I gave may vary from turbo to turbo. I took my dial caliper home one night but forgot T gauges so I cut a piece of welding rod and ground it to fit across the hole in front of the wheel to get that measurement. Metal Tech, I wasn't trying for really tight tolerances - I'm not a great machinist! That's not my forte! I figured anything would be much better than the stock design. I am going to try to come up with the ultimate inlet design and decide if I want to make an other one.
