Well I removed mine and put it back in 3 days after a bizz trip. It doesn't improve performance it just "screams" all the time.
With my new K&N filter now in place I don't need any more turbo-whine it's pleanty loud now. If I had the ring removed now I'd most likley go mad. It's located right at the input to the turbine blades you can see it by removing the big flex hose at the turbo entrance throat... . the large C-clip holds it flush to the machined surface. It takes a bit of effort to remove it... keep in mind if you "scarf" the aluminium be sure to wipe clean any metal shavings to prevent turbine blade damage. I found that going to a performance air filter and getting rid of the muffler (not the resonator) is pretty cool. You'll notice some "poop" doing this. The ring is just noise.
Thanks for the reply William, I just ordered the JRE cold air kit and I'm removing the muffler and tailpie this weekend. Replacing with 5". I think the silencer ring will stay put!!
I too put mine back in. Around town it is fine but if you do any towing where you are at 20 psi and over in boost at sustained intervals... . it will surely drive you nuts.
Took mne out about a year ago. Can't even hear it unless the passenger window is open. But I drive a big truck 12-14 hours every day, so maybe I'm immune.
