Dumb question of the month, does the exhaust side of the turbo have a silencer ring like the intake side does? The reason I ask is even with a Jardine 4" exhaust I have no turbo whistle out of the tailpipe like my 6. 5 or my partners 2002 powerstroke. What gives? DW

YES I HAVE THE JARDINE STRAIGHT THROUGH MUFFLER AND AN 18" IN FRONT OF IT TO CONTROL THE LOUDNESS UNDER THROTTLE. BOTH STRAIGHT THROUGH.

those would make a difference. I have heard strait pipes that do make a lot more turbo wine out of the pipe than trucks with any type of mufflers do.

I have little or no turbo whistle out the exhaust with my truck - 4" Jardine with Magnaflow straight-through muffler but no resonator. I do have a really nice 2000-2500 RPM drone in the cab, though! :( Gotta get a resonator!

Nice whistle...

I am running factory exhaust except the muffler is gone (resonator remains) and I have no drone, but a pretty nice whistle. I still have the silencer ring in the turbo. Resonator - Muffler - Silencer ring = Really Nice Whistle!:D

Drone

RustyJC: Mine was the same till I put a muffler as far forward as possible. At 2000 rpms with a load it was almost unbearable. Now its just the right amount of exhaust tone under throttle. DW

Dumb question?

 Ok here it is the dumb question of the week. I here people say and talk about having a drone. What exactly is it or how dose it really sound?

A drone is a low-frequency hum from the exhaust. If you've ever ridden in a rig with one that's annoyingly loud, then you'll end up with a headache.

DW,

Are you saying just moving the Jardine-supplied Magnaflow to the front of the system (i. e. , coming off the downpipe) and filling the space where the muffler originally went (i. e. , just before the "kick" over the rear axle) with 4" exhaust pipe cured the drone? If so, heck, that might be worth a try!

Rusty

2nd muffler

Rusty: What I did was add a second muffler, Dynomax from Rip Rook, as far forward as possible in addition to the Jardine in front of the rear axle. The drone was to much and the exhaust tone to loud for my taste. The second muffler gave me just what I wanted but no exhaust turbo whistle. DW

DWest,

Is the 'Dynomax' by any chance just a different name for the Allied mufflers that Rip Rook often supplies, or a whole new choice?

muffler

KRS: The Dynomax is not his normal muffler. It could only be 18"s long to fit in the space behind a frame rail so it fit the bill and serves as a resonator in my system.

Rusty- Do what others have said- move the muffler further forward. I did that with mine, and have only a very mild drone around 1600-1800RPM, which is just fine for me. Once the truck climbs above 1800, the drone completely dissappears and is not even noticeable. Having just returned from a 3400 mile trip towing the trailer, I was thrilled with it and have no regrets.

For what its worth, I have a very mild turbo wine from the pipe with only a muffler.

Have ring, will whistle..

One of the first things I did to my truck was remove the silencer ring. Now I'm running with it installed since it's so loud I've grown tired of it! The ring is there to control the high frequency sound at the airbox end, not the exhaust end. Even with mine installed, the turbo can be heard out the exhast. My exhaust is stock, with the muffler removed, replaced with 3" straightpipe, and factory resonator still in place. No drone whatsoever. Stock tailpipe too.

The reason my silencer ring is installed is because I have an Amsoil air filter, with the stock airbox, and the airbox to fender cone has been removed. Without the silencer ring, my ears would start to ring after a long drive. I've removed it and reinstalled it a few times and decided for now I like it better with it in. For now at least!

My hearing is the ****s anyway so i run a 4" straight without the ring and you can here me coming for a mile.

Also blow smoke on the freeway in traffic whenever you take off.

I think that resinator is an obstruction of exhaust flow.

After some carbon builds up in those little screens it looks like it would fight to get out.

4" pipe - muffler, resinator,silencer ring = peterbuilt.

Huh? The resonator is straight thru, like looking into the cardboard tube of a paper towel roll! There's nothing in there to restrict airflow. :D

My dogs know when I get off the highway.

when i took my stock muffler system out, I looked into my resinator and it appeared to have a series of screens inside to break up the carbon so when it escapes the muffler there is no visible smoke.

How about this does anyone know how the resinator is built and for what purpose. please define.

My curiosity is up and I don't know the answer for sure.
