Hello to the members. I have been lurking in the shadows for a year or so, reading and learning the finer points of ownerrship of our beloved trucks.

I apologize in advance if my questions are old hat or enter into the realm of don't ask don't tell R and D. I have been pouring over old posts and have not come up with numbers, so I will ask : Two turbos are on E-bay... . the Wh1C off a '94 and a HX 35 off a '98. My question stems from what the seller of the Wh1c says he has the bigger pin wheel... . at 56 mm. If so, then what is the spec of the HX 35? I am in the process of doing the head gasket and some homegrown porting and such. Injectors and pump will be redone with upgraded parts. I have been looking at Piers' HX 35 and wondering how things stack up for the money. I have seen some of the newer guys get lambasted for asking previously hashed over questions and theory. If I am guilty, could one of you kind souls point me in the direction of the old posts. I have tried "HX 35" and "Modified turbos" with little result.

I understand the risks of buying on E-bay. I am just trying to do some research on said items.

Ps... my turbo is the stocker with the 18cm2 housing.

thanks,

Dave

sounds like your gonna be going pretty fast in a little while, eh? as far as what comes on those turbos stock, i'm not sure. i have read that the wh1c has a larger shaft, but don't know if it's true. do a search on "hybrid", it should net you plenty of info. i just put a 60mm wheel into my h1c. got it from htt. good prices and good people. talk to paul.

ps. if you've got a question, ask it. we like helping out on this forum.

Thanks for the reply Swank. Having done some more reading only begets more questions... ... Hummmm.

I use the truck to tow my 9000 pound 5 er around the country for my line of work. I am not looking for a racer. As I read it seems that (as does everthing) the Hx has its limits. At this point I might get everything back together and see how boost and egt's look before making the choice on turbos. In regards to your modificaton with the new pinwheel, what are your thoughts. Did you need a new cold side housing to spin that wheel? Or did you have to machine the backing plate? How many blades does it have on it? P Bob seems to do well with his HX 35 and I'm not looking at getting as wild as Stomp. Just looking at moving enough air to support the fuel I am adding with managible egt's.

Thanks again.

Dave

Wild

Hey I never planned on going wild either it just happened. I have heard good things about both the Piers HX35 and the modified H1C with the htt goodies. I guess I am not much help in this topic am I. I think either way you go you will be happy.

When you get it back together see what you gauges are saying and then make a decision.

the wheel i'm using has 6 blades. it was referred to as the "high flow" wheel. i did not get a new housing, but you do need one and i would recommend buying the part. i spent about four hours with a lathe and a die-grinder and many trial fits to get it working. i did have to cut the backing plate. that was about 5 minutes (you only have to enlarge an existing pocket). the results have been very good. cooler temps, and much less back pressure at a given boost. that's with a 12cm housing though, and if your towing a lot maybe an all around larger turbo would be what you want. i'm going to end up with a small set of twins in the near future as i still can't get the pyro to stop without letting off the pedal. anyway, keep readin', you'll find something.

Your probably better off with the HTT stage three unit from an HX35 or the factory original H1C They sell you the new wheel and compressor housing, machine the backing plate, balance it all and it's out the door. It took them about three hours todo mine. They have one heck of a web site and will actually get back in touch with you if you e-mail them your questions.

If you go with anything smaller, you'll be pulling it back off when you realize your truck is capable of 350 RWHP and can only use 230 hp due to excessive EGT.

Porting will help. Do the exhaust manifold as well. Stay with the 18. 5 housing for now and establish drivability and EGT's befor you move into a smaller housing like the 16 and 14 unless your at 4,000ft.

Thanks guys,

I ordered some stuff from Piers and talked with Harry a little bit about it. Among other goodies I purchased a 16 cm2 housing for what ever turbo I end up with. I will get the injectors and pump back in and see where the numbers peak.

I was quite surprised to see how much a guy could do to port match the turbo to the maniflold. I never would have guessed. I am pondering what to do on the intake side as the air box has a lot of area and to me not as obvious. I will try to get to the intake ports and work to smooth up what I can get my hands on. I also want to try a mild pocket port around the valve guides and clean up the radius as per Piers' directions. I am in no hurry which is nice.

I went to diesel school 8 years ago, but most of what I learned was practical theory, and parts replacement. We didn't talk about turbo mapping, putting together a Hybrid or extrud honing injectors. The big deal then was that Cummins was working on an engine without a cam shaft, injectors and valves to be fired like DT 444E (powerstroke). I haven't heard any more talk about it.

I like the idea of using my H1c as it looks to have some life left in it. When it runs out of spec the I can justify moving up. I will also play with both the 16 and the 18. 5 housings and see how they fit my needs.

I hope to make it to some event one of these days to meet some of you guys. If I remember correctly Sams Rams had something coming up.

Stomp, your quest amazes me. Your quest will, I am sure, benifit all of us, through a trickle down effect. LOL I am sure you impress all the neo-hippies between Fortuna and Arcada. I went to school at CR for a year in the early 90's.

more questions to folllow,

Dave

Hey thanks Dave,

Yeah I have been known to smoke some of the neo-hippies around here. I wish I had dual exhausts then when I drive through the plazza in Arcada I could send a little soot to mix with the herb cloud up there. LOL.

Yeah I went to the academy out there at CR. Now I work down the road from there at the Power Plant.

I think the H1C is a fine turbo I beat mine pretty bad and it still works flawless. Once you get it back together and running it should be fine untill you really start to push some fuel through it.
