Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Turbo Sputter?

I haven't found an answer to my question yet i was hoping maybe some other Diesel Guru here could help me out. I don't believe it is a problem just kind of curious what it is. I got an 01' 2500 with the Auto, under WOT accel and then let off the turbo makes three short bursts like tisk,tisk tisk? it doesn't make this noise under any other curcumstance other that wide open with a quick let off of the throttle. Would that have to do with the wastegate spring opening and shutting or possibly getting weak? Any insight would be appreciated. My 98. 5' with the manual 5 spd. doesn't do this at all. thank to all who take the time to answer this. chad

Hey Chad, I had the same sound with my stock hy turbo and it showed up more with my box installed. Then I went with a bigger turbo and it was so bad that it would go off even under acceleration with boost as low as 15 LBS. I thought it was the waste gate going off too but was told by someone at Peirce that it was the compressor side backing up and chuffing out the filter. ??? Why,,, I don't know. I am now back to the stock turbo and am going to try this bigger one on my 92 when I get a new housing from PDR. Hopefully someone here can explain this to both of us.

Sounds like turbo bark to me. When boost pressures have built up high & you let off fast, the impeller no longer forces air into the motor & the high pressure pushes back out the inlet. Hence the strange noise you hear. It's not a good thing to encourage. Just let off a little slower from WOT.

yes, we call this turbo "bark" The higher you run the boost, and the larger the turbo, this tends to get worse. It can be hard on the charger so just ease out of the throttle a little slower and all is well.

I've heard mine make a airy sputtering sound at going into WOT. But I am also supposed to be wastegated at 42 psi and have seen 50 psi. Is this the sound of blowing past the WG?

no noise should be made when the wastegate opens it willjust blow the excess boost out the exhaust without you knowing,but u might have boost backing up and going back through the air-to-air i would say free flow exhaust and filter would help if not they make a kit that will purge the turbo eliminating this prob. ,but its about 600 bucks. hcad
