I have been reading up on different turbos, right now the 5.9 cummins in my 01 ram 3500 dually has the HY35W turbo. I am putting together a list of parts needed to gain 100-150 H.P. Would the HX35W turbo be a good turbo for this? I have read the HX40W is not that good of a turbo, would a PDR-35-12W be ok? I plan on changing the rear gears from 3.55 to 4.10, my truck has the 47RE auto transmission. does it matter if the waste gate is internal or external?

I have installed many of the PDR 35/14s on the vp trucks with mild upgrades, they will look oem to 99%of anybody that looks at it if you live where a smog program is in place.

HY35 has a 9cm exhaust housing for quick spool up and it can not be changed. They were placed on all of the later 24v automatic trucks to assist in making the truck quicker from off idle.

A HX35 is a worthy choice, looks like the stock charger, and would also afford the owner a chance to go a bit larger with exhaust housings. There is a 14cm gated and a 16cm non gated that will aid with keeping EGT's in check since you want 100-150hp more power.I will say that at or around 400RWHP your HX35 is going to get very inefficent and run very hot and may create a need for something larger. The HX40 and Super 40 are both good chioces if you run a 16cm exhaust housing, have the covers pinned and keep them gated for no more than 40psi.

I would agree with Joe here,a small S300 framed charger would be your best choice but until you address the stock trans adding 100-150 more HP is going to be useless.........Andy
