Dumb questions...can't find answers

Hi everyone,

I'm new to TRD so bear with me if this is a stupid question.

After reading my owners manual provided by Dodge I found that the turbo requires time to idle and cool the turbo prior to shutting off the engine. This can be anywhere from 15 seconds to 5 min depending on how the vehicle is driven. When I asked my dealer service tech about this he resembled this:confused:, and stated that just let it idle for a couple of seconds then shut it off. This didn't sound right so I blew off his input and continued to follow the manuals advice. Then I heard about a device from a friend called a turbo timer, its some ad on that keeps the engine running after you take the key out to let the turbos cool and allowing me to get out of the vehicle right away instead of sitting there like a dork for 1 to 5 min.

What my question is, has anyone heard of this product? And I've found that there are several brands that sell all kinds of variations of it, can someone suggest one that will work well with my 2003 Dodge 2500.

Thanks for your help. :D

Welcome to the TDR!

One of the places that is a good source for parts and other things for your truck is Geno's Garage. They have one of the boxes you are looking for here . I don't know if it will work on a 3rd gen, but give Geno's a can and they can help you with that one. A pyro to measure EGT's is the best way to see when it is safe to shut your truck off. Usually idling in second gear through the parking lot will get me down to 300*.

Another option you have is getting a remote start like mine, that lets you exit the vehicle while it is still running, and then shut it down later, or have it shut off automatically after 15 minutes. It is a cheaper route than the Turbo-Saver, but it will take longer to install too.

Isspro makes a turbo temp monitor that monitors a post turbo thermocouple and automatically shuts down at a preset temperate (factory set at 300). It's not a plug and play setup though - you have to hard wire it into the wires into your steering column. I don't know of anyone that's installed one into a 3rd gen as of yet. Here's the instructions that I did up on how to install it into a 2nd gen truck - http://www.dieselpage.com/art1199tm.htm .
