I pretty much know the answer to this already, but just for my own sanity I would like some confirmation on this one.
I was changing the oil at 12,500 miles on my 2006 quad cab cummins 6spd manual this weekend and noticed something I didnt like. Since I have to remove the air intake tube to get to the oil filter, I ALWAYS grab the turbine while its off and check it for a bad bearing. Well, to my surprise I can now wobble the turbine a noticable amount, which I believe should NOT be the case. I cant give a measurement since i didnt pull out the dial indicator, but i would think its safe to say you should not be able to rock the turbine up and down enough to notice the slack. I would guess and say its about 10 thousandths, but I know for sure when its pushed to one side, it reduces the clearance from the turbine blade to the housing by at least half.
My 1994 Cummins Dodge had 190k on it and the turbine was perfect last time I checked.
All that being said, i took it to the dealer and the mechanic and service writer are trying to tell me that this is all perfectly normal. I disagreed and then they said they will call cummins to get a spec, but it sound more like they dont have clue what they are talking about. Even then, they only said that after I informed them I was a mechanic for 10 years and am now a mechanical engineer and I strongly disagreed with them. I also told them if the turbine touches the housing, they are putting a new motor in.
One other question along with this, does anyone know of a dodge dealership in the Langhorne PA, or Burlington NJ area that specialized in CTD repairs. (Philly area) I heard rumors that a Cummins dealer can do repairs on CTD dodges, is there any truth to that? There is a heavy duty truck shop nearby that I would MUCH prefer work on the truck for engine related issues.
After the issue i had when i first got the truck and now this BS, I almost cant wait till the warranty is up so i can just fix the truck myself.
