I have a hy35 and it's about to take a crap. I was going to upgrade it to hx35 but maybe there might be a better options. I just don't know a whole lot about turbos so... I was also thinking about buying some rv275 injectors too, but don't wanna put headstuds. I don't have the money for that. Just want a little upgrade if that is possible i will be towing. I also want something to have fun with too. This is what I have done so far: 2001 Cummins fully build trans, fass fuel system, smarty, BHAF air filter, gauges, 4 inch down pipe to a 5 inch straight pipe.

I like the BD Super B for mild to moderate hop ups like yours. Helps a lot with egt's, flows a lot of air for its size but spools well.

First I know little about turbos so.... You will notice a little more lag than the HY. I have had my pdr35-12 for 200ish k miles now. I had rv275s and an edge ez and the hy handled it just fine though I must admit I don't tow that heavy. I then swapped the EZ for an Edge Juice with Attitude and it was still ok. When I added the smarty to the mix the hy did become a choke point when towing in the mountains here. Egts got a little high not excessive normally but towing in the mountains I would have to watch them, also started having trouble with huffing, stalling, barking etc whatever you want to call it when I would quickly let off the accelerator pedal and even at times during a transmission shift. When I called Piers (the P in PDR) and talked with him about them he asked me a very good question that still resonates with me today. The question was how often do you need the additional airflow in reality 1%, 5%, 10% of the time and will the tradeoff be worth it to accommodate whatever that % might be. For myself at the time I wanted a better turbo but the reality was I only needed the additional airflow less than 5% of the time perhaps more like 1-3%. If it had not been for the what I would call excessive barking with the HY I probably could have stayed with the hy to accommodate 97% of my normal driving and then use driving sense to drive around the other 3%. Do know that since you have an HY the PDR hx35 will require an exhaust housing in addition to the turbo itself which depending on where you get one is going to add a couple c notes to the price, though you may be able to find a takeoff for cheap.

When I went the PDR route they (Mark I believe) found me a used HX35 with a 12W exhaust housing for $200 bucks and charged me 450 to make it a PDR35. Been running it for many years. I went the route because I already had a Banks 4" turbo mounted exhaust brake installed, so it was a direct bolt on.

It tows my 12.4K 4th wheel just fine! I average over 12MPG at 62-63MPH towing. SNOKING

I've often wondered myself and will take this opportunity to ask. Is there such a thing as rebuild with a compressor wheel upgrade of the stock HY35 and if so does it perform well and is more cost effective?

People J-hook the HY35 turbo waste gate. It would be easier to find a take off if you want to stay with it. The small exhaust housing is the basic issue. SNOKING
