I have a 92 W-250 X-cab. I have noticed even after having things tweaked a bit that there is no whistle/whine coming from the turbo however it shows that it will pull up to 15-16 #s of boost. I know a guy with a 96 that sounds just like the bigger OTR truck diesels as soon as you start on the go pedal. Research indicated that in the H1C which is what I have Dodge had a silencer ring to stop turbo whine so I was went home today at lunch time and was going to pull that out but it was already gone. I paln to put the 16 cm housing or and HX35 turbo on eventually ($$ issue) but was wondering if anyone could shed some light on this... ... ...

Turbo whine?

What whine?

Oh that noise my wife comments about when I accelerate. Yah! I love it! Real nice! Didn't do it when she was still factory.

Thanks guys. Got the K&N but need to open up the other end I guess... gid rid of the muffler and just run her straight. On my vacation time I haul hay and cattle... it sure is fun to stuff you foot into 525 horses of Cummins power and listen to her whistle!

The H1C had no silencer ring. That came on the HX35.

As for getting the H1C to whine, when I replaced the stock 21cm housing, which is what you have as well) with the 16, I noticed a little whine. When I installed the PW injectors, there was significantly more. When I installed a very open intake, more whine yet. Installationg of the HX35 from PDR got me more whine than my 2 1/2 year old could take so I reinstalled the silencer ring. Now, with all the porting, some serious fueling and a few other mods, my turbo screams and my little one loves it! (so do I)

Toss the K&N and put a BHAF in there and enjoy the sounds. The H1C just barked until it died but no singee. The HX35 plays that wonderful big rig tune with no problem.

It was noticeable when I first put it on but after a year I have to stop and listen for it. Wife and daughter didn't like it at first but they quit complaining when they saw the reaction of other drivers to the spool up right next to their ears. :D :D

Lot's of good ideas. What do you guys notice with your MPG? The guy I had wrenching on mine said it would decrease, but I haven't noticed much difference so far. It varies do to the wind around here, it's usually around 16-17 the other day going to Billings running about 75 I got 20. 4... ... . Oo.

I don't hear much whine from mine either... but I think that's because I have a non I/C and the compressor wheel is 50 mm dia... the I/C H1C has a 56 mm wheel.

My wife can hear it pretty good because she is sitting on the same side as the turbo... .

A couple of weeks ago we were comming home via the expressway late one saturday night... . she mentioned being able to hear the turbo really scream at certain times... so I "played" with the accelerator and we determined that at about 8 to 10 psi and above she can really hear it.

A short time later she was nodding off... . so, being the devious sort, I would give the truck a little jiuce. . just enough for her to hear the whine and"wake up". She would quickly nod again and ... yep, I'd make the turbo scream and she'd wake up.

She never caught on what I was doing... ... ... . good thing... I wouldn't be telling this story.

:D

Oh. . changing housing size didn't affect my mileage... .

on my '91, I had a K&N... you could barely hear the turbo till I took a about a 1 3/4" hole saw and swiss cheesed the air box... then it was LOUD!

I would just put a BHAF on it and call it good. it'll scream :D

I never heard the turbo make any noise at all until I put on my BHAF. Now, I can hear it only when it's making extra boost, nothing just driving stop and go. I most notice it on the freeway when going up a hill or over an overpass. It's not much now either, just a bit of a whistle, but I like it! It does spool up a bit quicker and has more noticeable seat of the pants acceleration with the BHAF.

The h1c did not have a silencer ring, it's not even machined for one.

Oh, and let's not forget that your buddy has a small exhaust housing (assuming stock) and therefore makes boost and whistle faster.

The only way to make more whistle is to get a bigger turbo, open up the intake and exhaust. The intake makes the most improvement. Those two mods decrease spoolup time and decrease egt's also.
