Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Turbo whine

I just picked up my 34’ trailer and on the way home I stepped on it a little and is sounded like something in the turbo gave way. The turbo got 2 or 3 times louder with a real high pitch. I’m going on a short pull this weekend.



Any thoughts?

I'm not sure why it would suddenly change pitch but I suggest you check the play on the compressor turbine. Just remove the rubber hose & wiggle it side to side.

Was it still making boost?

Yes - I'm still getting boost.



I just checked the side to side play, engine cold, and got between 1/16" to 1/8" movement. I checked all the hoses and looked for metal shavings and all is good. I went for a test drive and all appeared normal for the first 5 miles then the high pitch whine returned (things warmed up?). I then checked the turbine play again warm and movement side to side was about 1/16"



The turbo only has about 10K miles on it.



Thoughts?

mine did that, the wheel was barely touching the side of the turbo wheel housing. check for play, rebuild kits are about $80. My boost was about the same, but it screached like a hawk.

You can always go bigger s300 series is very nice and can be had for about $1000

New info - the whine appears to be a supplement noise in conjunction with the turbo and starts at about at about 15 lb boost and gets progressively worse as boost increases. I was hoping the gauge line was leaking air but couldn't track down a leak. I'm heading out to drop it off at the shop as I have a couple big hills that will really test it this weekend.

Ten bucks says you have a connector hose that is leaking. Yeah you can look at all the hoses and say "Look tight" but the truth is far from the point. Leaks with hoses do not come into play until pressure is present.



Ten bucks says that the one leading to the intercooler from the turbo is loose being it's a "new" turbo and that would be the last thing touched. OR on the 2001's may have a small cut in it from the sheetmetal dirctly adjacent to the hose from contact under expansion.

Dumb question:



Is your air filter in good condition with the sound absorbing foam pad still properly glued in place underneath?



I once bought a FRAM paper air filter than didn't have the foam pad glued underneath it, and the turbo whine was significantly louder. I quickly replaced it with the proper OEM-style air filter and the sound level was back to normal levels.

If there is no Mechanical and performance problems, you may wanna leave it that way, It prolly sounds better

I don't believe the Fleetguard comes with that foam pad any longer. At least mine don't.
