Does turbo whistle (whine) come mostly from air filter area or from exhaust. I can just barely hear turbo whistle on my truck even with k/n filter and banks muffler. Maybe pdr hx35 will bring out whistle or will i have to open up exhaust too?
The turbo whistle comes mostly from the intake side. If you have a K&N in the factory airbox, it will only allow you to hear slightly more whistle. You can drill holes in your factory airbox or get rid of it altogether and put on an open element air filter such as a BHAF, K&N, aFe, etc. The PDR HX35 will have more whistle, if you remove the silencer ring. But for max whistle, you really need to get rid of the airbox.
When I ditched the muffler and put the 12 cm housing on my 93, I got a lot of noise from the exhaust side (gotta keep the airbox). When I go to the rear, I can hear it about the same as some big rigs. Kinda cool. Cant wait for the cash to get a PDR HX 35. May have to get a 4" and muffler. Even with just the 12 and a muffler, I still got a lot of whistle out the rear.

PS- fuelling will also affect the speed of the turbo and the pitch of its whining.
An unrestrictive air filter, such as the AFE Magnum Force, will rush air through the turbo, causing a great whistle. If you don't want to upgrade you air filter, or just want more whistle, just take out the turbo silencer ring.
just put a 4" straight pipe on, still have not put the Old Smokey/BHAF on yet and I picked up a lot of turbo whistle up and down the rpm range, I used to not hear it 'till around 45 mph(no tach yet) now I hear it down as lot as 20.....
