what does my 1990 dodge 5. 9, 250 run stock in boost and how much more can i run without messing up the motor???? i just put a 3 piece manifold from ATS and a turbo from a 1998 dodge 2500. so far so good waiting on the top oil line befor i start it up will get back with results later... ... ... ... .

Generally the IC'ed engine will operate at 15psi max with the factory fuel settings, give or take. I'll allow someone else to answer the other question about max boost with out harming the engine. That'll open up a can of worms.

When my non I/C 91 was stock, I was getting around 20. I have a 30 psi max gage, and I've been pegging it for a couple of years now with no apparent ill effects... .

Now bgilbert will give me you know what again for not getting a new gage... . :-laf

Thats right, 30psi boost gauges are for the Fords I think.

How much boost are ya running now and what kind of temps on the pyro are you seeing ?

That turbo from the 98 probly has a 12cm housing so I'm sure you're slamming a ton of hot air into your motor. Lots of drive pressure equals blown head gasket.

Something wrong with your turbo oil supply line now? If you think you need a new one for that turbo, wrong all you need is the fitting that goes ontop the turbo and the 90 nonIC'd line will fit.

And a big ole welcome to the TDR. Money well spent.

Interesting that you bring this up Bill. No one here has mentioned this but let me relate something I was told about 12 years ago.

I had to get the turbo from my boat engine (Perkins diesel) rebuilt. I sent it to United Turbo in New Hampshire. They did a good job with it, and in the box with the rebuild was an instruction sheet for installing and breaking in a new/rebuilt turbocharger.

They insisted that a NEW oil supply and return line be installed or their warrantee is void.

I called and their theory is that when the lines get moved around (ie bent out of the way) during the R&R that small particles caked on the walls of the hoses can come loose and clog the passages, and thus damage the bearings.

Jay,

Did they tell you that Ford ownes Cummins? :p

Sorry, I couldn't resist the opportunity to say something "smart".

Who knows, Banks "MAY" be right too... ..... the turbo cool down could be just that, a hoax.

I'd better stop it... ... ... .

interesting, my 80 crew cab with a 90 cummins and a getrag will only boost up to about 14psi, and the engine is 100% stock. I still need to buy a pyro for it and see what the egt's are doing. have a 12 cm housing for the turbo, but was thinking of maybe not using it just yet. also, this configuration is getting 24 mpg on the fwy at 70mph, is that perty typical, or high, if it is high, I won't mess with a good thing.

have a 93 IC cummins with a auto with the cooler and it's best was 22mpg, it's only mod is 4inch exhaust.

Sam :)

I get 22/24 on a daily basis... depending on how many "test runs" I make.

I can get 26 + on a trip if I keep it 70 max.

This is summer mileage. . subtract 2 for winter.

Jay

I don't know what the max presure is that you can safely run a 5. 9 cummins, But I run mine at 30psi untill I have to hit the brakes. This is cause I live in the mountains and haul trailers (average wieght between 12,500lbs - 22,000lbs)I've been doing this for the past 60,000 and no problems at all.

is that true scott? the banks part, that is?

Hey there new guy... . WELCOME TO THE RANCH... . Pull up a chair and jump in... :D:D

I think the generally accepted limits of a head gasket on our trucks is about 40-45psi... . and that is dependant on EGT's, cylinder pressure (timing) and so forth.

Many of us have run boost numbers higher that that and survived but it is at the limits in my opinion... other's more knowledgeable may wish to correct or amend that... :D
