Ok I changed out the oil cooler and it seems that the turbo was taken out by the cooler. I have some play in the shaft, a little more than there should be.

I am wondering what my options are. New turbo, rebuilt turbo, hx35 , hx40 or what else are you guys running... what do you recomend...

Since I live in Houston I can probibly get a used hx35 or hx40 reasonable anyone done this and modified it to work. . what are the problem area's any other issues I will run into????

I do plan on doing injectors later this year along with a full 4" exhaust.

Any coments or suggestions on what works. .

Some play is allowed. I'm at work but tonight I can get the allowable play specs for you. I did this once before so try a search.

Did a quick search and found the old post about this.

On turbos with a SN below 840638, end play is . 004-. 006". Turbos after this SN are . 001"-. 003".

Radial play(side to side) for both is . 012"-. 018"

This is from the Cummins book I have.

it is true that there will be a fair amount of play in even a fresh turbo the deal is that there are full floating bushings (at least in garrets)in there that have to alow oil on both sides the turbine/shaft & compressor wheel are balanced to a verry high standard so as it spinns it is floating in a cushion of oil the only real load placed is on the thrust bearing (the compressor wheel gets pushed twards the center section) if you grab the nut in the middle of the compressor wheel pull out & push in if there is play that way Id be a lil alarmed but the up & down play I wouldent wory about too much unless its real bad or of course you hear the turbine or compressor wheel hitting there respective housings or if oil is getting pumped into the exhaust or excesive amounts into the intake a good thing to do is to feel a friends (known good) to get an idea of what is acceptable I am new to the dodge scene I am not even fermiliar yet with all the turbo sizes & even make on my new truck but I have allot of turbo experience from my hot rod (old saab I built from the ground up)

hope that is of help
