Hi folks, still REALLY need some help with this question. Bottom line is, should you be able to feel any turbocharger shaft end play on the air intake side? I need to know ASAP.

In the planning stages of replacing shrunken exhaust manifold. Thought I'd check out Turbo while I'm at it. I do have some noticeable shaft end play on the intake side, haven't checked it on the exhaust side yet (still fully installed). My Dodge factory service manual calls for . 004"-. 006" shaft clearance. How do you guys check a factory turbo for wear? My Cummins connection says that they just go by feel. My truck only has 123K miles on it.

Turbo clearances

The end play is axial movement of the rotating element, it will be the same on air and exhaust end. Radial movement is side to side or up and down movement of the shaft/impeller. Don't have specs for yours but 99 isaxial: . 0015 to . 0035 inch. Radial is . 128 to . 195 inch. You would measure the axial by placing a dial indicator on end of shaft and moving shaft in and out as far as it will move. Radial can be checked with feeler gage. Push rotor to one side and measure clearancesh rotor in opposit direction and measure, difference between two measurments is play/movement. bg
