what is the word on an hx40 turbo. are they any good. ive seen 35's, my stock one is a h1c and i also have a hicw, which is mine but it was with a wastegated turbine housing. out of these turbos which should i run. i have straight exhaust, and im planning on turning up the pump, possibly lucas 55 hp 104 flbs injectors. im also putting on a wastegated 16cm housing. any helpful hints, or suggestions? i have all of the turbos i have listed above. just need to get some technical info. thanks guys. im addicted to this site. it rules... thanks for the welcomes

Chris-

I have a PDR HX35-12, no intercooler, and can make 34 psi empty on the flat, and 1250* in the manifold. With the Lucas injectors, and turning up the pump, you might be well off to get a HX35. They seem to have a higher efficiency range than the H1C (33 vs 25psi). I wouldnt wastegate it with a 16 housing. If you get an HX40, you will have to get a 4" Exhaust, and make (or have made) a custom down pipe. The only reason I know of to go to an HX40 is if you are having EGT issues, though there are several guys here who run bigger than HX35 turbos. Nascar Mark, Old SMoky? You have more experience in this arena than I. Many others do too. Might see about a cam and/ or porting, too, though they can run into some work and big $$$.

I was reading on Piers web site that his hx35 is good to 350hp, and it's way cheaper the the hx40, which is good to 450 hp, so unless your putting out some scary hp, the hx40 would be a waste of money. www.piersdiesel.com , cruise the site, he has some useful information, or call, they will steer you in the right direction.

I have to agree with DPucket about the turbo housing, most of the high hp guys are still running 16cm non wastegate housings, if you plan on towing or hauling some heavy weights, I'd stick with the 16cm housing, if your just cruising around town, and don't want the turbo lag then you could go smaller, but you still have to watch those egt's, make sure you at least have a pyro, and maybe a boost gauge, tach, and if you have a auto, get trans temp gauge, the transmission can get pretty hot if your carrying some weight, I have had mine up to 260 degrees  hauling my travel trailer up hill, in the fog with nowhere to pull over.

ChrisHowe,

The HX40 is a good turbo, depending on what you do with it. It looks like the 40 would be much to large for the power level you are at. A stock HX35 would be a slight improvement over your stock H1c, but a hybrid 35/40 would probably fit you best. As for turbine housings- a wastegated or non wastegated 14cm2, or a non wastegated 16cm2 housing will work well. It just depends on how much money you want to spend and what your expectations are.

hey guys. thanks for all your info. here is the deal tho. i have a hx40 turbo, and a h1cw that a friend gave to me. the h1cw has a 16cm housing which ultimately i wanted cause thats what i have read to get, me having a 21 stock. the wastegated housing is all he had. i know there is a way to set the wastegate to open at whatever boost i want, correct? my guestion is, say i used the 40, with the 16cm, and set my boost to a safe range, would that work out to my advantage in the long run, since the turbo would be good for upgrades in the future? the thing is my friend said to use what i want and he will just take back whatever i dont use. i believe at no charge ya know. so im just looking to get the most bang for the buck. im new at the turbo diesel upgrading, but i do know high performance. i have a prostreet challenger with a blown hemi in it, and i know not to run 18 pounds of boost on the street with pump gas ya know, so i turn the blower down with pulleys. that is the angle im looking at with the 40/16 turbo and housing, knowing the power is there if i need it. does this sound like its a good way to go? my guages are on there way, i got a boost, and pyro coming. i allready have a fuel gauge. next ill need a tach. this is what i have, so im just trying to work with it. thanks for the help guys, this site, and all of u rock.

Chris,

As an afterthought, it is kind of hard to "overboost" these engines with a VE pump. I make 34psi with mine, and some guys here top 40 with PODs, and major pump tweaking. I think the engine components are good to about 45(?) or so. So the more air you can get, the cooler it will run; the cooler it runs, the more fuel you can feed it:D Fuel + Air= Power. Dont have to worry about preignintion or any of that in diesels.
