Turn on air and BANG!! '06 related.....

Wasn't sure where to put this cuz not sure if it is an engine issue or chassis. Anyway, when I go to turn on the air in the cab after starting the engine, I occasionally get a loud BANG/grinding/engine stumbling noise that only lasts for a split second. It also only does it when the engine is cold and the block heater was not plugged in. The A/C is not turned on just the basic air. It's almost like there is some really noisy louver in the ducting that gets hung up somewhere.

It really did it bad the other day when I was leaving the house. Let the truck warm up for a couple minutes(no block heater plugged in), then left the house and when I got on the street, turned on the air and Bang!/grind and this time it even stumbled the engine going down the street!

So has anyone else had this happen with their '06 or know what the heck is going on with my new truck?? Maybe this is not an '06 only thing??

it's your AC compressor kicking on and is a completely normal sound. Sounds like something is breaking, but that's just the way it is. If you have your air switch to any kind of defrost setting, your compressor will come on, even if you don't have the ac turned on.

Don't say all..... 04, 04. 5, 05 and I've never heard it... . my trucks sit outside all the time without being plugged in unless it gets down to 20*f or below... than they are plugged in.....



We often don't move the heater controls in the winter time... . leave them on full defrost most of the time... .

Mine will sometimes make a "Clunk" sound when the air is turned on but it's about the same as my 2nd gen Cummins. Not a BANG for sure but you can sometimes hear the clutch engage.

They all have "clicky" compressors. My 04. 5 does.

Sorry not ALL. But I have read about it A LOT and mine does it if you turn the A/C on or the Defroster on right after starting it, when it has been sitting for a while.

Thanks guys, makes me feel a lot better to know that this is normal. Still can't get over that this is normal from the terrible sound it makes. Makes sense though in the defrost setting as Lips mentioned. I tried a few tests today and couldn't get it to make the noise in any floor or face vents but when the vents were turned to the defrost/defogger setting for the windsheild, wah-la! Guess I will be staying off the defrost setting until the truck is warm.

I would have to say i have an 03 and does as well. I just ignore it.

I was told by a mechanic to leave the AC in the "ON" position all the time and control the temp with the variable temp control, the reason was so the compressor seals would stay flexible if they were used every time the engine ran, time will tell, but I leave my control on all the time now, cant say I've heard any clunks coming from it yet.
