I am wiring an additional side mounted turn signal indicator on some cargo trailers we use for work. I do not want these lights to run with the brake lights switch as they would also illuminate with the brakes. I have located and tapped into the 18gauge wire that feeds the turn lamps circuits for the front. My question is if there is enough juice available to power an additional lamp from this circuit or should I use a relay? We tried them already just using a test, and there was no problem, but I just thought I'd check a bit further before completing the wiring.

Your wiring should be able to handle it. But, because I never know whos trailer I am towing I run all trailer light functions through fused relays. That way the trailer can't overload the switches. What connector are you using?

Tom- The trailers have a standard 7 pin Pollak connector and I added a seperate round 4 pin (Like what's used to tow dinghy behind RV) to add left/right turn, some additional backup/loading lights and a spare? My concern was if they trucks lighting circuits could handle it. If you think I'd be better with a fused relay, I'll do it. Better safe than sorry.

How'd you get the amber rear turn signals on your 01'? Any pics?

I just got home from a long day.

1-The first thing I did was put tractor lights off of the hitch for back up lights. I hooked them up to a relay using the trailer power feed for the 12v and the b/u light wire to trigger it.

2-took the turn signal/stop wire and hooked to the b/u socket and installed amber bulbs. 3-in the loom comming back is a white wire with a tracer on it. I don't remember if it brown or purple. It is marked "chmsl" it is for the high brake light on a shell. I hooked the brake lights to this. 4-at the t/s switch i disconnected the white wire with tracer from the connector. this takes the brake light trigger out of the t/s switch. By the way I also have strobe lights in the front turn signal and b/u lenses

;) Any questions send an e-mail
