Found a 2006 with 26,000 miles. How easy would it be for some to have turned back the clock on this. seems really low. can the odometers be reprogramed since they are digital?

roughly 4k miles a year does seem on the low side. What is the owners story on the truck? Is he the original owner? I would get the VIN and do a carfax and probably go one step further and ask them what dealer they bought the truck from. The dealer should have some kind of history on the truck and if the owner doesnt have anything to hide should be more than willing to provide you with any info you ask for. If the mileage is true, you have found a true gem! Good luck.

Hi jkh,
What kind of price is on this vehicle due to the low mileage ? I have an 06 with 31k miles that I am going to sell and would like to know the market for a rare find. diesel4life is right on with a carfax etc. I have one for my truck and it takes the ??? out of the deal. Now if I can figure out how to post an add my truck will be looking for a new home. I will be at May Madness if any interest. Good luck.

My trucks have never been back to the dealer and we've always cared for them ourselves so I can't imagine any kind of data on my trucks...

I was told that the dash module is linked to the ECM by a code... and the ECM is actually where the data for the odometer is stored... It was said that if you pulled the instrument cluster out of a used truck it wouldn't function until the dealer linked the two with their equipment... I guess that Sag2 or Bob 4x4 needs to chime in and maybe give us the complete detail...

I did purchase a few trucks from Canada and had to change it to the US system... and I think the Speedometer shop that did the instrument cluster conversion for that switch told me that after they were done with the physical changes that the dealer had to finish it up... BTW when it was done... . the KM that were on the clock had changed to MPH... But as I remember the last truck was either the 01, or the 02... . when the exchange rate made it $5,000 cheaper to buy it there and bring it home...

Just my thoughts. .

I took delivery of my 2002 3500 ETH/DEE dually in August 2001 and sold it in September 2010 (when I took delivery of my new truck below) with less than 46,500 miles on the odometer. That's an average of 5166 miles per year.

The 2002 was used only to tow our 5th wheel RV and was garaged at home whenever not in use. Despite the low mileage, it made trips from the Houston area to Arizona, Tennessee, Missouri and all over Texas for RVing trips and rallies. So, yeah, the reported mileage is low, but it's certainly possible depending on how the owner used the truck.

Our 2011 (delivered 9/11/10) has just over 13,000 miles on it as this is written.

My 10 year old truck isn't a daily driver and is used only to haul our Lance camper and occasionally tow a utility trailer to town (5 miles) to pick up landscaping supplies or haul my Kubota compact utility tractor to the dealer (15 miles) for service. The rest of the time it is parked in an insulated and heated garage. A couple of weeks ago, the odometer rolled over 40,000 miles. It too is averaging 4,000 miles per year.

The mileage is stored in both the cluster and the ecm. There are strict laws on tampering and the hardware is much harder to change than when we had the rolls that could be pulled out and reset. Clusters are an exchange part these days and the repair shop will program in the same miles as what was on the origional part. There is always a small chance a wrecking yard cluster could be installed but the ecm can be verified or dmv records can be helpful

While driving home after purchasing one of my '06 trucks the odometer quit working. In my business running a DOT log book a working odometer is a necessity. Finally discovered that I could buy a used one and install it without a trip to the dealer. Since a diesel cluster was not available at the time I bought a gasser version which worked perfectly, the only real difference being the red line on the tach. Later found a diesel cluster and installed it. Of course neither cluster had nearly as many miles as the original with 533,xxx when it quit.

It is also ***sible to pull a fuse and drive the truck and the miles will not accumulate on the odometer. Not something I would do but I have known guys to do it.

Godspeed,
Trent

My neighbor has a black 1998 CTD 4x4 dually with a big Lance camper on it. It has just over 5000 miles on it. He uses it for one 400 mile camping trip each summer. It sets in his driveway that has painted yellow lines for him to park in.
I purchased my present 2004 dually in 2006 with 4000 miles on it. Now it has 124k. There are "cherries" out there but you have to dig them out.

ABC news had a segment on carfax listing some cars as clean that had been in serious wrecks and semi repaired. There were public records on the accidents and other car checking services had flagged the cars. Point being carfax is not foolproof so even if the fox says its all good do your own homework and get under the vehicle to check it out.

Carfax relies on reporting by every repair shop and dmv's that will never happen 100% of the time.
Some states allow rebuilding a totaled vehicle and not changing the title to show it. I have seen trucks tottaled in Cali and hauled to Texas to be rebuilt and titled in Texas, only to be brought back and sold in Cali with a non-salvaged title-buyer beware

I have a 97 3500 that is going to turn over 100000 miles. I am 77 and it will probably outlast me. Still a real chery truck, no rust.

I picked up my '07 2 years ago with 9k on the clock. Previos owner was on Cummins Board of Directors. It seems he didn't have much time to drive it; from what I understand he has a bunch of cars.
