I got a wild hair yesterday after changing the oil on the truck and decided to tinker with the pump a little.
Started out with one full turn in on the fuel screw, one full turn down on the smoke screw, and 1/3 turn down on the starwheel. Also turned the diaphram 90*.
The difference was immediately noticable, even before I pulled out of the driveway... the idle was up considerably higher than before.
Once I hit the road I was amazed at how much of a difference it made, but I was getting a lot more smoke than I wanted.
Brought it home and readjusted the smoke screw to 3/4 turn down and the starwheel 1/4 turn down from the stock settings. I took it for about a 45 mile drive, but still was getting a decent amount of smoke during low boost conditions.
Today, I returned the smoke screw to the stock position and that brought the smoke to a more tolerable level, but I still need to drive it more to see if I need to do any fine tuning. Once I make sure it's where I want it I'll have the idle set - don't have a tach yet, so I'll pay the $35 or so to have the local shop get it right... still not familiar enough with the oil burners to set it by ear.
Before messing with the pump, I would hit 15 PSI and around 1100* at WOT. After making the adjustments I'm seeing about 20 PSI and 1200*, but haven't driven it a lot since the last tweak.
Hopefully making the adjustments won't hurt the reliability or kill the fuel mileage... once I can keep my foot off the floor, that is.
Just out of curiousity, how do the settings I ended up with compare to what the rest of you have?
