I got a wild hair yesterday after changing the oil on the truck and decided to tinker with the pump a little.

Started out with one full turn in on the fuel screw, one full turn down on the smoke screw, and 1/3 turn down on the starwheel. Also turned the diaphram 90*.

The difference was immediately noticable, even before I pulled out of the driveway... the idle was up considerably higher than before. Once I hit the road I was amazed at how much of a difference it made, but I was getting a lot more smoke than I wanted.

Brought it home and readjusted the smoke screw to 3/4 turn down and the starwheel 1/4 turn down from the stock settings. I took it for about a 45 mile drive, but still was getting a decent amount of smoke during low boost conditions.

Today, I returned the smoke screw to the stock position and that brought the smoke to a more tolerable level, but I still need to drive it more to see if I need to do any fine tuning. Once I make sure it's where I want it I'll have the idle set - don't have a tach yet, so I'll pay the $35 or so to have the local shop get it right... still not familiar enough with the oil burners to set it by ear. :D

Before messing with the pump, I would hit 15 PSI and around 1100* at WOT. After making the adjustments I'm seeing about 20 PSI and 1200*, but haven't driven it a lot since the last tweak.

Hopefully making the adjustments won't hurt the reliability or kill the fuel mileage... once I can keep my foot off the floor, that is. :D

Just out of curiousity, how do the settings I ended up with compare to what the rest of you have?

Well lets see full power screw all the way in. Diaphragm at full custom cut. Star wheel all the way down. Smoke screw yeah its buried. Yeah it may smoke, but it is controllable, but just think at it this way its still not enough.

I am also 24 years of age and I just learned that my mileage is directly related to my right foot. LOL:D

By "full power screw all the way in," do you mean all the way to the lock collar???? I popped the collar loose on mine - I could only get 1/2 turn until it hit. (BTW - Thanks to whoever suggested turning the locknut out against the collar to break it loose, it worked like a charm. :D)

I've known about the right foot vs. MPG relationship for a long time, but this is all done for the purpose of reasearch. Yeah, that's it... research. :D

BTW - Just noticed you're in Eureka. I was through there a couple times in the past few weeks, on the way to and from Brookings, OR. Came back down to eat at the Samoa House, too... good stuff!:)

What I mean is throw away the lock collar and then turn it all the way in. Yeah the Somoa Cook House is a great place to eat I usually go out a couple of times a year.

Brookings is a beautiful place to go did you go for business or pleasure.

Research?????????? Didn't you like the extra power???????????

Yikes - don't think I want to go quite that far with my truck... .

My folks live in Brookings, so I went to visit them. Also did some fishing on the Rogue between Gold Beach and Agness - ended up with three nice salmon (14. 7-18 lbs each).

Oh, I like the extra power alright - I have no intention of backing the screw out. :D A set of injectors is still on the list, but I figured this would hold me over until the $$$ is available. ;)

Does it hurt when the bug bites you? Although i think it was just a nibble ;) Me personally I'm saving all that fun for when the weather smartens up so I can make some $$$ for guages, 4" exhaust all that stuff... So, is it a BIG difference?

Now Stomp,,, if yer gonna make that suggestion you also gotta explain how to have a buddy near by with a run-away board to stop it..... oh ya, and the manual shut down lever instructions too... you kids are killin me here... ... :D:D

Your AFC will make a very noticable difference in you mileage. The richer it's set the lower the mileage... we all accept the "right foot" theory as a contributing factor too...

The smoke screw has no purpose in life other than to provide a bit of preload on the AFC diaphram, which in turn helps with a bit more fuel on the initial launch stage... after that it's on holidays...

The starwheel can be used to delay the ramp up of fueling until you have a bit more boost built up... try tuning it with that in mind as you look at your smoke vs. boost vs RPM.

As for your idle,,,, use the wobbly test... .

In gear you drivers mirror should not show any wobbly (ok not the best phrase). If the mirror picture is shaky the idle is too low.

Raise it till the mirror steadies up and your good to go.

I bet you are within 25-50 RPM of, 750 RPM.

You just want to make sure idle is enough that when in gear and the AC on high you don't drop idle too much which also means your oil pressure draws down and your coolant flow slows as well.

just my thoughts...

pastor bob.....

CGauthier - It made a very noticable difference. ;) Of course, I just got back from a 3200+ mile trip with the camper on (loaded to 7700 lbs), and didn't drive it much between dropping the camper in the back yard and the adjustments, so that might make the change even more noticable. ;)

Bob - As long as I don't loose too much on the MPG I won't mess with the AFC. We'll see how things go over a few tanks of fuel and then go from there. I've been averaging about 17-18 MPG in mostly around town driving. Heck, I averaged 16. 3 on vacation - better than I ever got with my F150, even empty and under ideal conditions. :) I'm kind of interested in the Old Smoky pin, but wonder what effect that would have on a mostly stock truck???

If I still get more "off the line" smoke than I want I'll bring the starwheel back to stock and see how it does then. I think I'm pretty close right now, but will see how it does to and from work tomorrow. We're having mosquito problems around the neighborhood already, so maybe I should crank it back up again. :D

The idle is definitely too fast right now - that much I can tell by ear;), and by how it feels when shifting from park/neutral into gear. It's probably not off by more than 50-100 RPM, but I'd still feel more comfortable getting it set by tach. :)

Dan,

I'm about where you are with adjustments... . smoke screw is about 3/4 down from stock and about 1 turn on the starwheel.

I get some smoke if I lean on it hard under about 1600 rpm... but I can also control it if I'm light on the pedal. Might back off the smoke screw a tad and see if that cuts it a little.

Have fun.

Dan,

Dan Dan Dan,

Get yourself the ISSPRO Tach. You already have some ISSPRO. Add another. Very easy to do.

Some of the basic pump adjustments I've done early on are as followed. Please keep in mind, I "ain't got no smoke Nazi's in these here parts"

Turned the fuel screw in till the engine ran away, then backed it out a tad.

Removed the "star wheel"

Buried the AFC set screw.

These simple adjustments have made some noticeable changes in the way the truck handles

You too will need some injectors that will handle the increased fuel flow.

When you cut you'r teeth on these, PM me and we can discuss "Phase Two"

;)
