My truck is in the trans shop (again) after having some bad reverse shudder when backing up any grade. I dont tow, or drag, so I dont think Ive damaged the trans. Just a daily driver.

Had it rebuilt last april, only have about 9k on the new build. I drive my work truck anywhere far that I have to go. The rebuilt trans has a 1yr warranty, expiring in april. Before it was rebuilt, I measured the TV cable, when I got it back, they didnt change the setting at all. (original 96 cable far as I can tell)

Question is, after it was rebuilt, I adjusted the TV cable 1/4" (because they didnt) to get some better 3-2 downshift action, and theyre sayin its possible my adjustment caused a problem in the trans. Guess I shouldnt have said anything. dam. They said the 123 shift pattern is all wrong, but it feels pretty much the same as when it was delivered back in april (cept for that 3-2 downshift problem). never really had a problem with the 123 shift cept that mebe 2 didnt hold long enough.

I need some ammo to say that a 1/4" adjustment to the TV cable wouldnt fry a seal or something...

Please trans guys, help me out... If I can possibly fix this myself, I`m willing to dive into this with a manual. I`d really love to get my trans running the way I`d like it. I`m open to suggestions.

Thanks!!!

A lot of shudder is caused from u-joints, also I remember adjusting the cable on my 99 47re gasser and never had a prob. Good luck

I had a auto repair shop were my landloard was trans shop and I thought a good one , and he said that a badly adjusted cable could be hard on trans , but it would be hard to tell with out the before & after feel , it sounds like from your discription that it wasn't to bad but when in the situation that your in its all about those varyables , and the rebuilder may be using the adjustment as a escape .
If you can not reach an agreement with then you'ld be looking at small claims court , find a manual [they need facts ] that discribes the adjustment and if it fits your discription bring to court , thats all if its as you say , your say just has to sound better than his .
If it hasn't turned into a yelling match yet try to work it out somehow , it could take 6mths to a yr. to go through court and then the one in the right does not always win.

Yea I`m thinking its an escape routine. . If I adjusted it more like 3/8 to 5/8" then I might see where they have an arguement. But I purposely only adjusted it a little, seeing as how they didnt change it at all. .

sigh. . i dunno. . all this $ and my trans isnt really better. . hm

as for the u-joints, when the trans was out, they replaced both in the driveline im pretty sure. did the carrier bearing too cus it was sloppy as all heck

Update to this---

Trans guy isnt argueing with me anymore... BUT. . he says. . When I made the adjustment to the TV cable, I went the wrong way. I increased the tension on the cable, and he said I went the wrong way. He sez that is the adjustment for a gasser. That doesnt make sense. .

So, he is re-adjusting the cable, and making an adjustment on the valve body for a better 3-2 downshift. (yay)

He also said the lack of pressure due to the cable misadjustment could cause a reverse shudder. . could this happen?

no transmission guys in this forum huh. .

not a trans guy but

when I exchanged my V-body for a dunrite (trans buddy) upgrade the shop told me to adjust the TV cable to a 1/4" of play or it would hang and not shift into 3rd untill you let off . and at first it down shifted when you let all the way off the throttle (some band adjustment was to loose combined with the TV cable at 1/4 caused this) from 3rd to 2nd and this was corrected in addition to a new gov and transducer we were ready to play

this I know the more you pull the cable the higher the pressure with mine more screwed up than a christmas turkey it never had a reverse issue.

96's are the most tempermental of the "e" seires (first year computer trans)

hope this helps!

Truthfully I do not expect much out of this relationship, they have there out and it was supplied by you. The question about the adjustment will weigh heavy in a court of law, since they are the experts in the Field. I would take the lose and use it to your advantage. Next time you will not be so quick to offer up any incriminating information, and now you are free to take the transmission to a quality shop and not settle for a mer re-build, but actually take it somewhere where they will make the changes needed for the transmission to not only function better, but also live. It has been well documented that Dodge transmissions fail at an extremely much higher rate in diesel powered trucks when in gas powered trucks. A stock rebuild does nothing to address the many changes needed to make the transmission live behind a diesel. I liken it to replacing a lamp in a drop light with another normal lamp, instead of using a rough service lamp, the lamp will fail with the next bump, or drop. Save for the up-grade and forget the rebuild.

Got the truck back last week... still got issues, talking with rebuilder. .

Low gears work great now, which was the original problem. 3-2 kickdown is also good. .

But. . lockup is horrible. I used to get 1800-1900rpm at 70mph (3. 54rear) now its 21-2200. When 3rd locks in, it feels almost like fluid coupling still. .

WTF did he do? I got an appt tomorrow for some testing, but this is really getting to me. He did the repair work (burnt rear band i think), under warranty so there was no charge, but he fixed one problem and created another... wtffffff

sigh. I`m very close to gettin a book and tearing the crap outa this thing. . sigh.....

Not sure what you mean by fluid coupling ?
Differance in RPMs look like your not getting OD/4th , it seems to me that lockup will drop RPMs maybe a couple hundered but OD/4th will drop 3-4 hundred RPMs .
When I was wrenching , I let the trans shops do tranies and did everything els , I've been into a few , but in small 1-2 man shops it was too much to do as a full service shop , just have a good shop to do my tranies for my customers ,
At least thats my excuse for not having a good or complete answer for you , and I'm sticking to it .
I would still try to work with the trany guy , it sounds like he's tryen , and and then you can learn from his mistakes , as for doing it yourself , it seems the best books are coming from the suppliers of the parts after market , the suppliers to the trany shops seem to do a good job of finding the updates of weak points in trany's .
Even though as a shop , I do not want to get into the trany buis. its a nother thing to be able to do all my own fixen on what I own , so its a tough desission weather to build my own or have Goerand Bro. build for me , it will have more to do with having the $$$ when it gets close to neeing .

Well I went there today, about 15miles out of my way, and the guy sez 'our diesel tech is not here for the rest of the day, can you bring it back saturday'... . well I just drove all the way here, you told me yesterday to bring it in, and now hes not here. sigh.

JFaughn: When lockup occurs, I get less than 200rpm drop. And when climbing hills, it feels like Im still in fluid coupling (torque converter mode instead of full lockup).

transmission did NOT do this prior to me taking it to them last week. Lockup was great, it would pull hills and sit ya back in your seat. On my normal route home on the highway, theres a hill i usually pull about 70-75mph at 2000rpm. Couldnt make 60 at 2300rpm.

this sucks.

Took it back in, president of the company rode with me, hooked it up to an official dodge scanner, and read pressures and lockup speeds. He said he didnt like what he saw, must have been a misadjustment by one of his guys.

End result is, he's ordering me a new upgraded VB that will take care of my issues, all under warranty. A bit of a hassle for me, but if this will make it right, I think I can deal with it. They seem actually concerned about it... good.
