Evan, I thought you had to take out the heater assemble to get out the back injector? How do you get the injector out with out removing the unit? Sorry i said ac i meant heater. Are you doing that many sets a week with performance injectors or stock?

There's a trick to getting the #7 injector out on a 94-97 PSD... There's a little vacuum chamber on the heater/AC unit that unbolts real easy... Has two little 5/16" screws holding it in. Takes about 15 seconds to remove it... You can get #7 out if you don't remove the chamber, but it is a pain. You want something difficult, do injectors on a 99+ E-series van... :{

As for your other question, we don't do many sets of perfromace injectors on the PSDs... Mainly we are removing the injectors and sending them out for sublet evaluation. You'd be surprised how out of whack they always are... . The performance injectors we install are from DD, and they work great. Yeah, they are spendy, but worth every penny. Idle quality is vastly improved, as well as over all power & economy. We get A LOT of PSDs through the shop, probably 10-12 a week during the summer. In the winter we are down to about 6-8 per week, along with all the other stuff we have rolling through... Seems like we really get the weird ones in the winter. For example, I have a '98 GMC G3500 cube-van that needs a new injection pump and injectors... That one should be fun! All in a day's work, I guess...

Sorry for going off on a bit of a tangent... :p

99% of the PSD's I have ever worked on have been '96+ cut-van chassis..... ambulances.

Never had to touch injectors... but had to mess with high-pressure oil stuff, IDM, WATER PUMPS!!!, back pressure sensors... . and the other usual good stuff.

Evan, I am afraid you are mistaken- the PSD never need any work done do them. I have that on high authority from the Ford site!!!!!LOL

*LOL*

These Ford guys are always surprised when I hand them an estimate for $4,000 worth of engine repair... Most trucks have less than 100K on them... For some reason they were under the impression that the PSD was low-maintenance.

Evan: Is F*rd still getting $3200 for 8 injectors? Last time I checked... that was the going rate.

The one advantage the PSD's have is their intercoolers... . they're only like $260 brand new in the box!! :D

Matt

PSD injectors average out at about $325 each. Not too bad, when you consider what DMax injectors and ISBe injectors cost.

Speaking of 99+ PSD intercoolers, we used to have about 25 of them sitting out in our back lot at the shop, until we sent them to the aluminum recycler. Got a few pizza lunches for the crew with the money from the recycler! :D Anyways, we replace the stock one with a higher-flowing Banks intercooler--I'll see if I can dig up the numbers on it. Just comparing the two side by side, you can see how well the Banks unit works. The tanks have a better taper to them, allowing air to flow to the top & bottom of the intercooler better. Is it worth the $900 or so? Nah, probably not... Unless you are running BIG horsepower...

The PSD is capable of some pretty big power... We've turned a few waaaay up, and they'll outrun most of the Cummins stuff... Watch out, some of those 'strokes got teeth!

Don't even get me started on the DMax... *LOL*

Evan,

If you have PSDs that can beat MOST of the Cummins stuff, you guys have some sick Cummins!

!:--)

Line them up, we'll come out and handle them for you!;)

LMAO!!! It's true... I guess I should rephrase it though... The PSDs with big power will outrun most of the mild to midrange Cummins stuff... There's no contest when it comes to BIG Cummins power though--especially with a sweet 12V. :D

12v power statement huh? Mr. 24v Man, have you torn into the 12v yet? Are you ready for the "power"? He he he, hey, vans, injection pump/injector work, guess just guess what pulled into the shop today... . a motorhome with a 565 ISX WITH EGR :p :D That will just be a joy to try to errr oh hmmm..... service?

Gene, I think that you need to buy the white truck and tie it up in the backyard and let the red truck watch over it. If the white on acts up too much, the red one can smoke it out like a bee keeper, you know, calm it down :D

Just playing Johnboy, but why? That truck was a way cool PSD, hate to see one of the big players go.

Russell

Somehow, ol John managed to get him self a "star" stamp of approval on the Ford board, dang near a living legend!

Going to miss having old Smethport god to kick around.

He diid mumble something about," with a hood scoop, I'm pretty sure I could fit 4 turbos in there, loose the intercooler... . yea. . thats it. . " last summer.

WOW 40 PSI BOOST WITH TWINS!!??

Wow is that possible// 40 psi with twins on a psd? My mostly stock 5. 9 runs 35 through a single charger. There must be some misterious force at work here.

Haven't torn into the 'ol 12er yet... Will be doing that as time makes itself available. A little bit at a time is about all I will be able to do... Anyways, I can't wait to get started! I will be "properly valved" before too long... Hopefully within the next year or so.

We've been swamped this week... Been working until about 9PM every night. Just wrapped up a fun one tonight... A 1998 GMC G3500 van, with the 6. 5L diesel. Had to put a new pump & injectors in it. Turned out great. One hell of a project though! :D I love a good challenge...

ISX 565 with EGR... Sounds like a blast... My buddy at Kenworth has been keepin an eye on those things. The seem to run pretty well, with LOTS of boost. They have had to start putting 0-50 manifold pressure gauges in the trucks. :D Pretty cool, huh? Gotta love that VGT... Wait till you see what Cat is got lined up for their next generation of engines... I'm sworn to secrecy, otherwise I'd spill it!!!

Gonzo,

40 psi is a big deal on a PSD..... especially with stock injectors, John did good!

Customer:

"Hello, I would like to order a 60# boost gauge for my PSD. "

Vendor:

"What for? You checkin your tire pressure?":D

Mr. Beck, I second the motion towards the yippy on the boost on the egr's, and that vgt sounds so cool when you rev it up and let off.

Yeah, Cat, I figured what they would come out with would let them laugh last.
