I am wondering how you guys with twins are supporting the weight of the second turbo? Are you supporting it with the exhaust from the smaller turbo or a brace bolted up to the motor?

A little of both, where were you when I installed mine in Cynthiana? Everyone else was there! Just remember the turbo twists with the engine. Good Luck.

Ok, so for the twin turbo setups, are you running stock turbos - such as 18. 5 or 23. 5 into a 14 or 12cm2 housing?

Scott.

Uncle,
I'm already running an HX-40 with an 18 housing. I am not concerned with drivability, just a lot of boost and a lot of HP. The 40 will feed into the larger turbo. Not quite sure what turbo I am going to use.

Forgot to ask you Eric, what kind of pipe did you use from turbo exhaust to turbo exhaust? Was it exhaust pipe or something heavier? Also, where did you run a brace from?

I just ran an exhaust pipe, limited budget. There are a few threaded spots on the side of the engine that provide spots to screw your support brackets to.

The exhaust pipe going from the top turbo to the turbo below, I've seen on certain trucks #ad
, is a 3" steam pipe elbow with custom machine flanges welded to both ends.
Smoker1, sorry you missed the all-night twin-install on Eric's truck in Cynthiana, KY, a couple weeks ago. We had more than 10 local Cummins Ram owners show up on an impromptu basis, once word got around... I'm hoping to get a club going around here...

EMDDIESEL,
Yeah, it'll probably be for pulling. No bottom end speed as it is, but I ain't worried about it. Just huntin' for a lot of torque.
Briar,
If there ever is another meet nearby, I want to know.
One more thing, how much boost can the factory head gasket hold?

the head gasket will hold around 85 psi providing the inlet temperature of the air is not to hot.
You guys need to look at the maps for the turbos you are trying to use. We need around 1450 cfm on the first stage to support around 500hp at 3200rpms.
The hx 40 tops out at 41psi and 130000 rpm at 800cfm. The h2/hx55 at p/r of 4(41psi) goes to 950cfm at 110000rpm. The next step is the hx 60 is the turbo that goes on the signature 600 cummins, flows up to 1600cfm but the smallest exhaust housing is a 22 wastegated. So it looks like the best combo for the holset is the hx 55 with a 19 wastegated housing.
Something to keep in mind about this is if you have the same sized turbos for the first and second stage the outside turbo has to spin twice as fast in order to make boost on the second stage or you need a turbo that is twice as big. I am currently working on a combo with Bell turbo that should be able to satisfy what we all need. If you start spinning these turbos past there intended maps you end up with heat, that is what kills the head gaskets and the motor. So before you spend a bunch of time making "twins" that will probably make more boost than you previously had and work better than one turbo. It may be detramental to your motor. If you do make something work make sure you keep the turbos in their designed perameters or it will be catastrophic. I don't want to talke people out of trying these things I just don't want to see people needlessly break things needlessly.

Adam, do you have the map showing the effeciency of the HX35 with a 14cm housing? Mine is currently running 38psi I'm wondering how far out of the curve I am.

Thanks,
Jerry
