My friend has a 1989 cummins and would like to add twin turbo's. What two turbo's are you running? Thank you Kirk

Seems that the HX-35 and some "B" sumthn' or other is working well for some. Keep this in mind... . there is a local Super Stock puller who only runs one turbo and cleaned up the competition, left them wanting. He only ran one turbo in a three turbo class!

I think we could make one turbo work well. Some truck guys are... ... ... ... ... . ;)

Kirk,

You friend needs to define his application. Racing, towing, sled pull. I plan on a Hx-35 BHT3B combo. Some want a little bigger charger on top.

I saw the price of a set of twins, and nearly choked. Think I'll be going with porting, cam, etc, if I need that much air. Your friend have an intercooler? That should be step one. Joe Donnelley is getting close to 800 to the wheels with a single turbo and 4" pipe. Just a matter of how you set it up.

Daniel

you can build twins cheap... a new HT3B-26 costs about $400... the piping, flanges, and an external wastegate won't cost you more than another $600-700 or so... even less if you pimp it... I got my HT3B-26 used in good shape for $50... I'll have about $200 in flanges and piping, and $200 or less in the wastegate. that's less than $500.

gonna clean up the head and o-ring it... figure I'll have ~$600 in the head after o-ring, valve springs, and a valve job... ~$350 for the head studs, and I'm good to go. :D

Hey I want a set of twinns and willl probably have them before the end of the year, but you can get serious HP with a single turbo.

JY price on the HX40 is probably gonna be up there higher, and gonna be harder to find... I like my 40, but there's a reason I'm doing twins... I don't like it that much!

heck, I'm probably gonna sell my 40 and pay for most of my twin setup :D

Forrest

He wants to stay on the low end of the HP range due to the age of the vehicle. But wants the practice of installing a set of twins.
a new HT3B-26 costs about $400...

Then I assume he would use his stock charger paired with the HT3B-26?

that's what I would do... that's what I'm planning on doing... the top turbo really doesn't have to do much work. (neither turbo does! LOL!) so the H1C should be fine.

I would build a system that incorporates an external gate... put a 12cm wastegated housing on the H1C. port the wastegate orifice. that combined w/ a 38mm external will give you plenty of ability to bypass the little 12cm housing.

this'll bring the boost in quick and still allow a good top end charge.

once he gets the stuff built, I'm betting he won't stay in the low end of the HP range for long ;)

All I gotta say is that if he wants twins they need to be small. Running an ht3b/hx40 setup is too big for what these VE's can put out.

I would just stick with a single charger if you say he is staying in mild hp range. The single turbo creates less drive pressure and would be a heck of a lot cheaper.

My verdict: just get a nice single charger.

Although, that doesn't mean that I'm not looking at twins... :D

There are a few 1st Genners running a HX35/HT3B set up and doing nicely. I'd try to find a smaller bottom turbo, though. Ought to be slightly less lag, and still flow enough for the upper limits of the VE output, though some (CB;)) are pushing tose limits on a nearly daily basis.

On a side note, how would a VT50 compare in flow and mapping to a HT-3B? No particular reason, just wanting to... ... Ah... ... . Um... . keep options open, as it were.

so what ever happened to jbolts setup. Is it still running? Did the l/p and springs change anything?? Hey jbolt, still around? I was wondering about twins on the 90, someday down the road. Didn't really want to go the p-pump route though.

Michael

A 60 isn't a bad turbo to use if you can get it at a good price, personally I like the Big Brother better and yes it flows more air!
