CTD break-in and towing?

I have never 'really' tested my twins for towing. This last couple of weeks I drove 3000 miles from Chicago to Florida and back. It was an almost too good to be true. I truck ran so cool, in fact it was hard to get the EGT's to go over 1000 degrees. I turned down the external wastegate so the big turbo would take more of the load. I ran about 30 t0 40 psi most of the trip. There were times on medium hill that I pulled 35 psi and 850 degrees. My approximate weight was 17,000 pounds. I am so happy with the twins I wish I had them sooner.

Sounds GREAT!

I always like to hear results and experiences like this as related to towing. My Turbo and boost are the same as always, but I will be very curious to see what my new Rip Rook 4 inch exhaust system, along with the Don M 1. 6 F1 injectors and recent BHAF upgrade will do for my truck in RV towing situations. I should be up in the 400 HP and 900 Tq range - sure hope it is usable power out on the mountainsides with our 5er in tow!

Hey Dennis, How are your twins set-up? What turbos are you using and what external gate? Do you normally run in the 40psi range when unloaded? Just curious because I would like to do twins, but don't want to do studs and o-rings right away, I was wondering how everything works together when you have the wastegate set for lower boost.

Thanks

Nick

I'm curious at the 30-40 psi statement also, I run a single but I dont even climb into the 20's unless its a good hump and that's running at around 24k pounds.

Dennis,

Are you going to the dyno days on the 23rd in Minooka?? I would love to see the twins. Heck $50 and you get 3 dyno pulls too.

YUP - prior to the exhaust and injector mods, plus the BHAF, boost maxed out at about 32 PSI. The mods, especially the exhaust and injectors REALLY make the boost jump to max in rapid fashion under accelleration. Haven't tried towing yet, and it will be interesting to see what changes might be in maximum boost and EGT - so far, in typical driving, egt looks to have dropped by about 200 degrees - but being winter, can't really be certain whether it's the mods, or cooler ambient temps...

Karl, I am organizing the dyno day, LOL. I will be there. !!!

I am running a PDR version of the HX-35 12cm on top with a stock HT3b 22cm on bottom. No waste gate on either turbo. I have the 'extreme' wastegate on whats called a divorced set up. I have an O-Ringed head. Its very hard to keep the boost down in he 15 to 20 range. Once the twins start talking to each other you shoot right up into the 30 to 40 range. You can adjust the wastegate to get lower boost. I had mine so loose could only make 23 psi. But whats the fun in that !!!

Man there is a big difference then in the weight to boost ratio. I run about 8K on the trailer and cruise at 72MPH, 18-20 PSI and 800-900 degrees. this is on level 4 of the PM3. I use level 7 for stop and go traffic and then turn it back down out on the open road. you should try turning your fueling down out on the open road. its much easier to keep a constant speed and boost level.

I have the hx40/ht3b combo with the 40 wastegated to 40. the most boost ive used so far loaded is 30 just trying to get down a short entrance ramp. that's just regulating it with my foot. I'd hate to see the damage I could cause if i were to unleash WOT on it. driveshaft would probably turn to a pretzel. it'll hit 60+ unloaded.

I've not seen over 1100 degrees either.

With the 600CTD and Bully Dog pup dn-loader I hit 30 to32# of boost, I tow 12,600# w/pup set on performance mode on my last trip... ran great, just got to watch the EGT gauge and fuel pedal or the temp will climb high

Todd,

On flat ground the boost was "normal" 15 psi or so. Only climbs on the hills. I should have been more specific.

You coming do dyno day next Saturday. Would like to see what you been working on. Short trip for you !!!
