Need 5" stacks with flappers

DD2's in now ????

I have available to me a professional pipe-fitter who likes to work on new things... like, oh I don't know, the THREE JET ENGINES HE'S BUILT BY HIMSELF FROM SCRATCH! :eek:



He told me he would be very interested in doing the pipe work on a set of twins for my pickup (insert evil grin here), and doing the work for $0. 00.



I would probably go w/ my B-1 on top and put the KS housing back on (faster spool). External wastegate and get an HT3B or the like for the big turbo. What else do I need to make this work? Obviously an external wastegate. Will the stock manifold work for a while?



I think if I wastegate them pretty low for now, and maybe just run studs for a while, the headgasket would hold.



What else am I missing? Besides a sponsor to pay for all this... anybody interested? Oo. :cool:

I would go with a B2 down below and a Tial 44mm wastegate with the v-band clamps. The v-band clamps dont leak like the 2 bolt flanges. Build a spacer for the wastegate between the manifold and the top turbo. The stock manifold will work, just make sure you support the bottom turbo. You needs lots of pipe, clamps, flanges, boots, and oil lines and your set.
 
I used to wonder the same thing (do i really need twins?) Untill one day i heard voices in my head saying TWINS,TWINS,TWINS! Now that i have them i still hear voices in my head saying MORE POWER CAPTAIN!

Turbo selection all depends on what power and drivability you want.

Don't for get to re-fab the heatercore line that goes underneath the manifold place it over it.

You also need to get the oil line for the big turbo. I used -6 fittings from summit. The fitting that goes into the oil supply hole for the turbo is a -6 jic to boss oring 90 degree fitting. Get a -6 to 1/8" npt fitting to go into the oil filter housing, and then get -6 90 and a -6 straight fitting.

You also have to be carefull not to get the front of the big turbo too close to the intake block heater, the oil filter.

For the cold pipe i used 4" walker bends (Aluminized) But will soon be chrome.

For the down pipe i got two 68 degree 5" elbows to work really well.

Good luck and yes it takes alot of patience, but is well worth it.

I understand why a 2nd turbo is a good idea, I just don't understand how you guys are doing it. How exactly do you hook a second turbo up the cummins, especially considering the way the existing turbo is situated? Do you split the cylinders, 3 per turbo? Is that why there is so much plumbing there when a second is added. The cummins doens't make adding a second real easy does it? My Powerstroke buddy has his truck bombed out and was wondering too. Wouldn't it be easier to add a larger turbo Vs. two, or does two just produce a lot more boost than any single? :confused:
 
Twins are awful. They make this annoying sound when they start to spool up. Once you get to about 15 or twenty lbs of boost the darn boost gauge starts jumping clockwise while the stupid pyrometer just sits there useless. Then after all that you have to put the brakes on to shave your speed down because you just hit 80 doing a simple pass on a two lane road. Yep, they are awful... awful nice.

You got that right Ron. I mean how many people can hit 40 psi at less than 1/2 throttle. And run down a 1/4 mile track with their box on kill and only hit 1300 degrees. Its terrible, take them away. And the airplane sound that comes on about 15 psi- thats horrific too.

Well I guess you had this up your sleeve for a while huh? Heck you might be able to keep up with me after all. That is when we both get a chance to go home. I just hope there isnt any snow on the ground when we decide to race. Let me know how they turn out.

Probably not going to happen for a little while. Gonna just start collecting parts. I've got till next April to have all the fab work done for free (when we graduate). Which means in the meantime I need to get everything else figured out and lined out.
 
The main thing to remember is if you don't have some sort of wastegate setup to push the big charger harder you are peeing on the wheels of progress. I can't believer people still build and sell kits were one charger blows in to the other without a by-pass gate unless they are huge... . Sled Pulling Twins.

Can anyone supply a picture or explanation of how the bottom turbo is mounted? What holds the weight of it? Is it supported soley by the hot pipe or are there other supports extending to... ... pan bolts?... bellhousing bolts? Thanks

My thoughts exactly. Hence why I want a little baby housing up top to get them lit up (remember what Sleddy says, "spooling is something you do on a sewing machine, twins LITE!"), and the big wastegate that is pre-that little housing dumping straight into the big turbo to get it spinning sooner. I can only imagine what a headache it is going to be tuning a set of twins at altitude with a tight t/c, and trying to get the best of both worlds, with lite-time and top end pull.



All in the name of horsepower... . Oo.
 
Maybe I'll just come down and have you install a set Fred. ;)



BTW, am going to be at speedworld this Friday evening drag racing if you are interested in watching your transmission try and break into the 12's. :D

If your hot pipe if bolted to the back of the HX and is bolted to the HT it should be ok just like that. If you are going to use a V band clamp and the hot pipe, its a good idea to give it support from another location.

The exhaust hanger that goes from the trans to the exhaust pipe also gives it some support.
 
Good point Jim.



I have a 40mm wastegate (huge I know) that is in front of the HX-35. It opens at an adjustable setpoint. Whatever comes out of the wastegate goes directly into the big turbo. No reason to waste good boost by dumping it all out the exhaust. Seems to work pretty well. Right now it peaks at 60 psi. I will probably turn it down to 55 or so when I get a chance.
