Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Twins or Single.....?

I know the twins threads have been beat into the ground, but I'm changing my truck and was looking for some advice (please see signature). I currently have a Edge drag comp but do not have it connected and am switching to a TST Powermax 3, I was wondering which turbo or turbos would be best. I tow 12,000 lbs maybe 3 times a month (NJ to NY) and am not happy about my smoke situation and lack of spool. I was wondering if a Phat Shaft 62 or 64 is the way to go or do I have to go twins. My PDR HX-40 has never really spooled like I had hoped with my combo, but I know it works great for others. Cost is definitely a factor. I have found a new set of BD twins for $2900. Sorry if this was getting lengthy.

I see you have 3. 55 gears. That doesn't help with the HX-40. It likes RPMs and plenty of fuel. I finally have enough, to make mine work pretty nice. EGTs are an issue towing, though.



A 62/14 might work better. Been thinking of trying one myself.

I spoke with Brady over at II a few months ago about the topic and he was very helpful. I was looking into if any other members had tried a combo like this. I still have my HX-35, and was thinking of using that in my possible twins and selling the PDR HX-40.

This has been brought up before in twins threads, but I'll bring it up again. If you use your current turbo as a top turbo in a set of twins the spool will be slower. However if you go with a smaller top turbo, and a newer technology bottom turbo, you can end up with more air flow over a wider power range. Personally I would pursue the idea of using your stock HX35 (with some mods), on top of an S400. You will end up with better spooling then your HX40, and move a whole lot more air. Plus the fact that you will only need to buy one other turbo (the S400), the $ gap between another single, and twins won't be as great.
