I have had my '04. 5 for about a week and a half. Dunno how many miles it has on it but should be close to 500. I have driven hiway miles and have not noticed vibration or hesitation, it is a 48re truck. One thing I have noticed is an odor both on the outside and the inside. I cannot tell if it is fuel or exhaust but it is noticible and very unpleasant. Has anybody else noticed this? We also have more cold air coming in on the passenger side than there is on the drivers side. Other than this the truck seems very smooth and quiet. I have not had time to contact my dealership but I plan to soon.

I have noticed the odor-smells like exhaust-I leave the heater on recirculate and have no problems-it is only when I stop that I notice it.

there was a thread on here about an exhaust clamp holding up some production maybe some got out with a bad clamp and that is why you are having that smell just something to check.

You are right Kevin, when I picked up my truck the service person thought it had been corrected but he was not positive. I have the advantage of being able to get service on saturdays so I plan to take the truck up there very soon. I am wondering if the odor inside the cab is related to the cold air coming in from someplace. My wife and I took a short trip today in the truck and I got it up to 75 a couple times on some new hiway we have locally and I did not feel any vibration in it at all. We are very happy with our truck, we just hope the odor can be eliminated. The exhaust clamp issue did hold up our truck for a while. It took 3 months to get it.

Just picked up my '600' today. Good news is that so far there's no hint of a drone, vibration, or ticking sound, but I have the flat-spot and with a little bucking at 2100 RPM. It acts like a clogged mid-range jet in a carburetor. Doesn't matter if I'm mildly accelerating up through 2100 or easing the throttle while still accelerating and letting it drop to 2100. Either way it lets you know you hit the magical number.

I also have an iron weight wrapped around the hose going from the PS pump to the brake unit. It's strategically placed 1/2 inch from where the plumbing from the intercooler meets the intake, and I can see where it's been banging against the clamp. A short length of good quality pipe insulation like they use on industrial A/C or chilled water lines will fix that...

RLighthall -- What was the temp. outside when you noticed the hesitation? It seems that my truck hesitates worse when it is cold - say about 30 degrees. Today the temp got up to 55 and the hesitation was almost gone. .

I have noticed that my 04 will take in outside air in trafic if the heater is not on recirculate. Also, by design, it wont recirculate if the defroster is on. Also the exaust will smell for a couple of weeks or so until all the clear paint and whatever else they have sprayed on it burns off

the dealer wants to keeep my 04 for a couple of days to try the exaust thing with the vibration. I guess anything is possible but I am not very confident this will do any good. Hopefully they will prove me wrong. The roving tech told me that this vibration is a little different than he had seen????

I'd bet someone a stek dinner , that if a industrial balancer got involved the source of the vibration would be found in an hour or two. I deal with this quite a bit at work (industrial HVAC ) , There are three good firms in this area Baltimore/Philidelphia/Wilmington in wich I have had big problems made small. All three have differant specialties, but use the same equipment to get the job done... . ie, aircraft/refinery & chemical/marine & transportation. Someone P. M. me if I should'nt list there company"s here. BTW,they are between 75 & 100 per hour.

AFacey,

It was 34 degrees at the time. It's supposed to be the same 'till Thursday or Friday, when the weather folks are guessing it'll be in the mid 40's. We'll see if that makes a difference...

 Mine is an '03 and it definitely had a front drive shaft vibration. I pulled the shaft and it drove perfect. That does not leave out poor U-joint angles causing the vibration. The dealer put in a new shaft, much improved. It still comes on at 72 and seems to go away at about 80, the perfect Interstate cruising speed zone here in Kansas. The troops will start tagging you at 80, speed limit is 70, truck does much better on fuel at 68. I have 30,000 on mine now and it still is not quite right. Makes great power, gets great mileage, just has that spot that is not sweet. I wish it could be fixed with a hose dampener, but why would it go away with a shaft removal?

I read somewhere amongst all the posts that this vibration problem COULD BE related to the wheel balance. Apparently if you lower the pressure in all the tires and the vibration sound changes, then it's very possible that's where the problem exists. ( At least partially). Worth a try.

Ever see the Seinfeld show where the parking lot attendant was in the car ??

If the truck is reved in neutral and its the DRONE thats been around A LONG time it will appear at 2000 to 2300 rpm. Mine got better over time and the new UPDATE power steering hose helped a BUNCH. Theres lot of threads and posts about THE DRONE/VIBRATION at THAT rpm range. Oo. Mine in the beginning was almost unbearable to drive at 60 to 70 mph any distance. But it was also evident in neutral. Mine is 4. 10 geared of course 3. 73 put you at a higher speed before it cuts in. I was TOLD several times it was TURBO and EXHAUST related and they HAD TOP people working on it. It fact I thought with 04. 5 it probably was cured. Exhaust and turbo changes.

My vibration did not go away with the driveshaft removed. It starts as soon as it goes into OD. It gets really bad in the 60 to 80 area. It vibrates, distorts the rear view mirror. It is very annoying. It is bad enough that after an hour or so it will drive you nuts and make you mad that you paid plenty of $$$$ for a truck that was suposed to be smoother and quieter than my 02 and it is not. I have passed up 4 opportunities to go to Topeka and see family and friends because I don't want to spend 8 hours on I-70 with the vibration. I had the front shaft balanced on my own, $45, the shop said it was out pretty bad; dealer already replaced rear shaft. I had very little vibration at idle on my 02, but the 04 rattles your keys. I realize that the hose may fix this but all it is doing is masking an excessive vibration to begin with. I am convinced that the vibration is either in the engine or tourque converter.

The vibration on your truck may be in the t-case or the shaft is poorly balanced. remember these shafts turn all the time. So does the chain in your t-case until you pull the shaft. Besides my front shaft bineg poortly balanced, it has rotational play in the front splines, new. only 1500 miles on the shaft. Chrysler reinbersed me for the balance.

Yea you gotta watch your butt in Kansas with the troopers. The only state I have seen with more cops is Alabama.

My 04 has this vib. problem too.

Mine is NOT related to anything related to RPM. It's mph only. 70-80 mph is the band. Cannot duplicate it in any other condition where rpm is concerned... . so I will not believe that it's the exhaust, or the converter, or the balancer, or the power steering... . Either something in the Transfercase is running out, or it's the rear driveshaft, or the front driveshaft... . or the front u-joints...

This truck is miserable to drive. Yeah some might say that the speed limit is 70, but driving 70 around here is a death wish... . and that's no joke. 80 and you're still getting driven over.

Reflash for hesitation or stumbling at temps under 30 degrees is available as of today. Just got call from service mgr...

All Issues resolved

HAppy to report all issues I had with my truck have been resolved. The last (vibration @70MPH ) problem was solved with the replacement of the rear driveshaft and transfer case.

I'm a happy camper now...

PS dampener corrected the 2000-2100 RPM rearview mirror vibration on my 04.

But, you should see that mirror jump around at 106 mph! Gee whiz!

I also noticed I have thrown a lead weight off the left front tire.
