Well I have taken one shot at fixing these junk seats, I am going to try again tommarrow. #@$%! I am going to try the " Spooled up fix", damn I hope this works. I love the truck and it has been very good to me just not my *****. I am going to try this fix if it dosen't do it I think I am going to retrofit GM seats into this truck. PLEASE if anyone has any ideas of what works and what didn't work please let me know. I had the seats fixed once , added a spring to the seat and foam. Then I bought new foam and just changed it. Now I am going to add more foam, cross spring the seat, and do the carpet trick. Damn this pisses me off. I did put steps on the truck to help my wife get in(not a fan of steps) I am the biggest of the two of us, I am 6' 5" and weight 275. AGAIN PLEASE HELP

Gotta give credit where credit is due.

In issue 51, page 49 of the Turbo Diesel Register G. R. Whale and Jim Anderson did this fix to a 2nd gen Ram. Their method worked great and it should work for you. Try different thicknesses of padding and different contours and maybe even different densities of foam. It took me a couple tries to make it feel the way I wanted it, but it worked and I was happy with the result.

Keep us updated.

Spooled up,

I will keep you in the loop on what happens. I will not be able to get to it untill Wednesday now. Thanks for the responce, any one else?

If you search on this, there is a good write up on it...

I took mine apart and replaced the coil springs with new ones that were shorter and stiffer. I then used a few pieces of carpet (not foam) to build up the seat... the fix has lasted for quite a few miles.

When I bought my truck I started looking for seat covers cause my Levis would get
damn grungy at work. Happened to get a FootSmart catalog in the mail and low and
behold they had a memory foam seat cushion. Why not kill two birds with one stone?
It's a bit stiff on these cold winter mornings, but a little body heat softens it right up.
Great for cross country trips. Less than $50 too!! FootSmart, I will gladly accept
commissions.

i just recently drove from connecticut to key largo, florida. 1500miles in 2 days. i have the mega cab with the leather package. let me tell you that soon as i drive all the way back i'm doing somthing about the seats! my backside was killing 3 hours into the trip. i'm not a big guy(170 lbs) and seats only had 29,700 miles on them when we left conn! i love my truck but these seats by far are the worst i've ever owned. my 99 had ten times the comfort these have. i'm thinking going katskins and some custom padding, maybe memory foam. our cans shouldnt ache after driving for 3 hours. the worst is if you have ever sat in a ford or chevy with the captians chairs. those are soooo sweet! why does dodge skimp out on a $50,000 truck? i shouldnt even be thinking about the seats!

Have the seat design been changed? My '03 seats are fine for long trips... including a couple of 17 hour marathons between the SF Bay Area and Billings, Mt. ! Just got back from San Diego... ~1000 miles in 4 days (500 down, 500 back 4 days later) and no worse for the wear! Of course, I have substancial 'on my frame' padding...

update

I had both the drivers seat and the passangers seat apart. First I was going to flip the seat foam from one to the other. You can do it but the side of the seat won't have the same foam cushion. So I ordered a new lower seat bun from Dodge $100. Then started the the install. First of all the new bun is not the same density of foam(go figure) it's softer. I had a auto upholstery shop do this. First they took the new seat bun and put a heavy canvas on the bottom of it. This is to hold the foam together better and help from splitting. Next if you look at the seat the metal frame narrows as it goes back. So they had my old seat bun and cut it up and epoxied the foam to the rails of the seat to make them wider. Then installed 2 different types of memory foam( top one softer and the botttom one firmer) Then they drilled the seat frame and installed a zig zag spring from side to side( from the factory these have nothing like this) to help hold the seat up. Then the took a layer of firm memort foam(1/2") and epoxied it to the top of the frame rails. They put the seat together and charged me $50. 60 to do this including materials. I have since dove a 3 hour drive with the truck. I don't feel the seat frame and the seat is much more supportive. Time will tell but I think they got it. I would like to say Talsma Auto Upholstery was very helpfull with this. This is basilly the fix that (Spooled-Up) posted. He gets the credit. I still feel for a $45,000 dollar truck this is bull$hit.
