I have an '03, HO with a Dually Depot 115 gal. auxillary, in-bed fuel tank. It came with a Fleetguard FS-1212 fuel filter/water separator (10 mic. , I believe).

I've been hearing that 10 mic's is not enough. 5-7 mic's can do damage to the fuel system.

Recently, I've heard about the Caterpillar Advanced Efficiency Fuel Filters that filter down to 2 mic's. Did a lot of checking to see if they had one that fits the filter mount that came with my aux. tank. they did. Cat. part # 1R-0749. It's a couple of inches longer and fits the filter mount very well. However, it does not have a water separator. Cost with tax was $18. 47.

Before I removed my old Fleetguard FS-1212 with about 12,000 miles on it, I drained the water separator and didn't find so much as a drop of water coming from it. I had purchased fuel, last summer, throughout the midwest ( In. , Oh. , Mi. , Ok. & Az. ).

I've been using Red Line Diesel Fuel Catalyst, recently. Mostly, for the extra lubricity.

Last Monday, I cut open 2 fuel filters from 2 different Duramaxes. Found rust deposits in both of them. Quite a bit in one and not nearly as much in the other. The one with not so much rust has been running Stanadyne for awhile, now. The other, no additives.

I thought this post might be of interest to some of you folks.

Thanks.

Speaking of Rust, When I returned from working oversea, My Kubota tarctor, which had been with a friend for storing and occasionaly use over the seven years I was away was interesting. When i change the fuel filter the top of the canaster was cover with rust and bubbled metal. Saying that if could of 10 years of the filter. but fuel filter will rust. :(

I spoke to the guys at Dually Depot last week about adding a 2 micron filter in front of the three way valve to filter both tanks, they said they saw no problem with that! So, I am planning on leaving the 10 micron with water seperator in and using a 2 micron on the frame to filter both tanks. I also plan to leave stock filtration in place as well... .

(But... I may add a Airdog instead!)

As far as finding water I am unsure if the redline product seperates the water or disperses it. If its a dispersal product..... you won't find water.

I plan on using Amalgamated's TDR fuel conditioner product starting ASAP!

DWordinger: From what I've heard, that is a fairly common filter size. A number of filters fit that filter head (mount).

Ceaman: Can you tell me a little more about Amalgamated TDR? Is it an emulsifier or demulsifier? Lubricity, cetane, etc. ?

The Cat. #1R-0749 does fit the filter head you got from Dually Depot. That filter head is a Fleetguard product part # 3930618-S. It is available from Cummins Stores. About $29. 00. (The number on the filter head base is 393061800. When ordering, the two zero's are converted to an "S". )

I was thinking of doing the same thing as you suggested, putting the 2 mic. filter between the 6-way valve and the engine. In that case, I would reinstall the 10 mic. Fleetguard filter back where it originally was, next to the aux. fuel tank.

When I called Rocky Mtn. Cummins, here in Phoenix, the parts counterman thought I was possibly making a mistake by filtering down to 2 mic's. He thought it would clog-up prematurely.

My thought, which i told him was, that I would rather have to replace filters more often than have to replace a fuel injection system.

BTW, the Red Line Diesel Fuel Catalyst is an emulsifier. It separates the water molecules into very fine molecules and passes them through the injection system. It's possible that is why there was no water that came out of the water separator. I bought fuel all over the midwest, this past summer and here in the Phoenix area, and there was not a drop of water in the fuel.

What do you fuel injection system "Guru's" think about extra fuel filters on these trucks? Is 2 micron's too much filteration? Does that much filteration put too much of a strain on the fuel pump?

Cummins seems to think that 10 mic's is enough. Chev. Duramax has made a dual element 2-7 micron fuel filter element available. They have a similar Bosch HPCR fuel inj. system and seem to think it's a good idea. Remember, they have been dealing with these systems since 2001. We've had them since 2003.

Thanks for your input.

If you do a search you will find plenty of info. But I will tell you what I know about Amalgamated. Amagamated is a company who sells its products almost completely to refinerys in bulk. They are located in Fort Wayne, In.

TDR did a test of fuel additives in a issue (dont remember the number), and the TDR mixture was specially designed for purchace to TDR members, is a demulsifier, with a cetane package, Anti-Gel package, and a lubracant, ect. It is sold in 5 gallon or larger quantitys.

Like I said I dont know much but after talking to Gary @ Amalgamated (260-489-2549) I was convinced!

If you are going to filter down to 2 mics you better have a before and after fuel pressure sensor. Get readings with a new filter and change the element if the after filter sensor drops more than 2 psi. The lift pumps are NOT top $ pumps. I have a 2 mic filter on my FASS pump and I watch the fuel pressure closely.
