Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Code help

I've just picked up a '02 3500 24V with a couple of irritating problems.

First the injection pump was bad and i had it replaced by Dodge under waranty. However it is still pouring out diesel smog anywhere past 1/4 throttle unless the turbine is spinning at full speed. What it looks like is that i have the system programed to dump as much fuel in as possible at all times. I think that when i bought it, someone had cranked up the fueling and had not turned it down when they sold the truck.

The Dodge dealer claims that they can't put the "original" program into the truck.

However when i used the smarty we have for another truck to push the programing down to level 0, no smoke at all and it now drives like my old 2006 third gen 2500.

Anybody got a good idea what i can say to the dealer to get them to reprogram the system with the true default program??

Second problem is a bouncy cruise control.

I thought this might have been originally related to the injection pump but it is still with me after the pump was replaced.

what i see is the cruise engages and then the rpm bounces up and down just about 50 to 100 rpm. The speed changes about 1/2 to 1 mph rather jerkily. It is progressively worse depending on what speed you want to hold. At 50 mph you don't see or feel it really. At 70 it will drive you nuts and make you not want to use the cruise. Steeper hills will make the problem much worse. It's like the computer s getting incorrect speed sensor data.

I'm not really sure where to look for this problem.

Anyone got ideas?? Love to hear them.

thx

The cruise will be responding to the throttle which is being controlled by the ECM.

My bet is, if you take it to Cummins, they would be able to restore the original ECM parameters if you explain the problem. I am wondering if the individual that owned the truck ahead of you replaced the ECM with another one? That would answer allot of your problems as it would explain the performance problems in a supposedly stock ECM.

I think it might be worth looking into on your part. I know that if you order a new ECM from Cummins, they use the Engine Serial # to find out what the original ECM configruation was. I had thought about buying an extra ECM for my truck a few years ago and this is what I was told.

When you return your truck back to STOCK with the smarty it always puts a true stock program back in, not the old one it replaced. That said it still smokes after the smarty?

Is it possible you have oversized injectors or a box?

Might check with the old owner,to see if the ecm is a mad ecm. The dealer would not be able to see the correct config.

Do a search on here to learn more about a mad ecm.

After the stock smarty download you have the newest and best stock program available... . as well as the high idle and 3 cyl idle. The dealer will usually charge you for that. I would use the smarty sw its the newest and its free to try.

NO, you have returned the truck to stock. say you put it on sw8 then you put it back to stock..... you have the newest program as well as high idle. any other program other than the stock sw vin locks the smarty.

ok, i got my hands on a smarty box and used it to "return it to stock". That made the difference i expected. It smokes like a HO should. When you romp on it. However, the cruise control is still hoarked. Nothing got better with the original ECM code in. Now i guess i need to look at cabling, bad diaphram in teh vacum controler for the cruise or something like that.

An 01 H. O. uses vacuum on the cruise control. Did they change this on the 02 or leave it the same:confused: I thought the 02 H. O. used vacuum also. I have an 01 manual but not the 02 so I am rather curious.
