I just finished installing a 2 wheel low kit on a 2001 six speed and a 1997 five speed. This kit is a little different than most of the others . It does not use any electrical hookups, it does not allow the front axleCAD to be without vacuum on either side of the actuator while in 4WD, and can engage and disengage the front axel any time the transfer case is in four wheel drive. This means that you don't have to flip a switch BEFORE you shift into 4WD. To get 2WD low just pull the transfer case leaver into low range. Then if you want 4WD just pull the knob and it will engage the front axle. Now if you want to go back to 2WD low push the knob back in. To protect the front axle the system is set up so that it can not be engaged until the transfer case is shifted into 4WD. If anyone is interested I can put together a kit for the 1998- 2001 for about $70. 00, slightly more with the shifter mount for the 1994-1997 models.

Here is a picture of it in a '01 6 spd.

Ron,

yes, you are right it is for the exhaust brake. It took me a while to find a valve for the two wheel low kit that had a red knob to match the e-brake switch. Bob

I'm interested. I have a 2001. 5. Does the switch have to go right where yours is? I've got the box for my Cobra 75wxst radio under there, and the cord comes out there.

I like it. I need that 2 wd low option for my truck, especially when I back under the slide in camper. I would like one of those kits. Email me, so we can hook up, I am here in seattle. -- email address removed --

Thanks... ... :D

I am also interested. I have a 2001. 5. I would also be interested in the step by step process of the install. Degree of difficulty etc.

Just wanted to make a comment on Bob's two wheel drive kit. He installed one in my truck this weekend and it works great. I have a 30' 12k 5er that I have to back up on a narrow street and park against a retaining wall. Needless to say it takes a few stabs to get the 5er put away. If it was dry out you did not want to use 4x4 low because it would bind up so bad. Now you do not even need to work the clutch, just idle along and it works great.

Installation took about an hour to install it and that was including a lot of B. S. sessions.

Thanks for all the replies. As far as mounting goes, It doesn't look like the transfer case shifter bracket will work on the '98- '01's as the shifter is too short and travels too far. But there is a lot of options of where to put the valve. We put the one in Mike Clay's truck in the back of the console that seem to be a handy spot for him, but everyone is different. I need to get some measurements but it looks like it could be mounted vertically also. Other possibilities are under the dash, in the cigarette lighter hole, or on the transmission shifter. I will get some detailed instructions out to you soon.

Thanks again everyone. As soon as I have a count of how many valves need to be ordered I can get a firm price. I also need to check on shipping to see if it can be included in the price. I haven't had a chance to check all the different trucks so I can't say what the best mounting location will be for each application, I would appreciate any ideas you have and will work with you. For the first set of valves an option of either black or red knobs will be offered. I will be getting back to everyone as soon as the supplier gives me a delivery date for the valves. I am working on complete instructions with pictures and diagrams that will make the installation clear.

Thanks Bob

Sounds good. . For $70ish, put me down for one. I could of used it last night, had to move the 3 trailers around with my front hitch. .

2-low kit

Bob - I had just decided to purchase a kit and now you dangle this one in our faces. Can you provide me with the general technical information on how it works? How long does it take from order time to delivery?

I very much like the idea of being able to go from 2-low to 4-low and back to 2-low easily.

Thanks,

Marty

Hi all. I took another look at the shifter mount and think there is room for it on the drivers side of the shifter, unfortunately my test truck had to leave before I could finish. Now I'll have to hang around Wallmart's parking lot flagging down Rams asking if I can look at there shifter :) .

If I could get anyone who is interested in one to e-mail me with the year of your truck, standard or auto trans, black or red button, shifter or console mount, and mailing address I will start a list. As for pricing, the basic kit W/O the bracket is $70. 00, this will include shipping via regular mail. Add $12. 50 for the shifter bracket. As I stated earlier the valves are special order and take up to 10 days for delivery. They can be shipped next day air in about 4 days if anyone wants one sooner (at added cost). After I get the valves the kits can shipped the next day. It looks like it could take two to three weeks for delivery of the kits.

Briefly , this is how the kit works. On the transfer case is a 4 way 2 position valve that controls the front axel disconnect actuator and engages the front axel when the shifter is placed in 4WD. The new valve is also 4 way 2 position and is used instead of the transfer case valve, only manually operated. Then the transfer case valve is turned into a 3 way 2 position valve by plugging one port and used in series with the manual valve to prevent the front axel from being engaged if the shifter is not in 4WD. The first time I tried this kit on my truck I did not have the transfer case valve in series, I engaged the front axel while in 2WD at about 5 MPH and knew instantly this was not a good thing. I hope this answers some of your questions

2 low kit

Bob, my truck is '01. 5, six speed. I would like to mount mine in the cigarette lighter location. Black knob would look fine I think.
