Donner party is a lesson for all to remember, don't take short cuts. You mentioned your related to someone from the Donner party, were you serious?

yep a direct decendant of the people yes not funny just really seeing if people still remembered

I never travel with out a set of chains in winter time. The road conditions change by the minute when you are driving here. If going through Missoula there is the Rocky mountain elk Foundation. Yellowstone is beautiful this time of year.

whats the rockey mountain elk foundation?

What about chains in the montana, idahoe yellowstone areas. Tahoe area i am familiar with towards co but nothing north of that at all.

I've recently been up in the San Jose/ Bay area and there are quite a bit of attractions and spectacular beaches and Pacific views along the Pacific Coast Highway. If you plan on transiting the Donner Pass and head toward Yellowstone I highly recommend a quality set of tire chains. There is no harm in having them just in case - even with a 4x4. Be safe and have a great time.

Don't forget a set of chains for the trailer, if chains are required sometimes they will not let you go without a set on the trailer. ;)

Yes I forgot to mention that K80OU is right, if you are pulling a trailer (RV) regardless if you have 4X4 you will have to chain up the truck & at least one axle of the trailer. This is in CA as I use to live in NV & Traveled on I80, RT50 & RT88 all the time.

Where can one buy chains?

In tx there pretty rare!

Just came back from a trip that I took chains with me on. Didn't have to use them thankfully but I picked up mine for the truck and trailer at Walmart looked like a good set of chains. Took them home and put them on to make sure that they fit correctly BEFORE!!! I needed to use them and they are actually a good set of chains. I use cable chains for the steer tires.

If you buy chains at Les Schwabs (tire store through out northwest)and dont use them they will take them back. As far as trveling across I90 in MT. chains unlikely needed but nice security,Gotta go watch what obama has to say . Safe travels

WalMart or Costco or Sears tire centers to start. If the locals don't have them they should be able to tell you which store along your route who does. Les Schwab is a NW chain from Bakersfield to WA, OR, ID, MT. Think about not chaining the front steer axles, Have a look at where the brake lines are.

Jfought,

Here is some info on the snow coach in yellowstone. . http://www.yellowstoneparknet.com/winter_recreation/snowcoach.php

I would avoid Ca. as well unless you are going to 6 Flags Magic Mountain. . That is north of LA.

Lots of fun up here in Utah. . Lots of Red Rock and snow and tubing adventures. Just come up Hwy 89 to see Bryce Canyon, (see pic). . Zion, and then up to Salt Lake City. . We have Concealed Carry and recognize other states. . Also have open carry... Local auto parts sell chains here. . Not too long of a drive to Yellowstone, our local mountains near Park City has a tubing park that is fun. .
