I applied for a Va. title today on my 89 Ram 250 regular cab long bed 2WD. There were two sections on the Va. title application for the empty weight and the gross weight. I don't have the truck in my posession yet so I had to take a guess on the ratings off the top of my head. The title from the state I bought it from has no figures listed for the weights.

Here's what I put down:

Empty weight=6,200 lbs

Gross weight=8,800 lbs

Am I in the ballpark here?

Another question:

Is the auto trans. a 518 or a 727 torqueflite?I would like to know which and if one is better than the other and why.

TIA

Phil

I think you are a little heavy on the empty weight. Out here, if the empty weight is below 6000#, they don't charge as much to transfer titles. I completly emptied my 93 extended cab 2 wheel drive when I bought it and got the weight down to 5600#. Fuel tank was only 1/4 full, no driver in the cab when it was weighed. Also made sure no tools were left in it and the tool box was out on the ground at home.

You have a 727 transmission, no overdrive in it. The 518 has overdrive, lower RPM's at road speed and better mileage.

Thanks Stan,

I really wasn't sure on the weights. I already have the new title and am glad thats out of the way:) . Hopefully it won't make that much of a difference.

Glad in a way it's got a 727. I am very familiar with these units and had one behind my 1968 340 Barracuda and 1985 Ramcharger. A bulletproof transmission at the time and held up well behind the old 426 Hemi's.
