All You Wanted To Know About UConnect

I only have one problem with your post... . WHAT IS "U-CONNECT" AND WHAT IS IT USED FOR????? :--) For that matter, where would you put it if you had one... . or two????

I have it and it works great. when I get a phone call on my bluetooth cell phone it rings over the radio speakers whether or not the radio is on. you just push a button and listen over the radio speakers and talk into a mic up by the rear view mirror. to make calls you program the U-connect with the numbers you want and then just push the button and say "call" and the name. or say "dial" and give it the number.

I too have the bluetooth option on top of the RB4 radio.

It is so nice compared to any other "hands free" phone.

When a call come in your radio mutes and on the radio display it will show caller ID / phone # along with a female voice that says "Incoming Call Press U-Connect to answer"

Up on the rear view mirror is a button you depress when a call comes in and you want to answer.

To call you just speak & say "Call" or "Dial" depending if you want to use a stored number in U-Connect or a different number.

Another neat feature is the phone book in which you store phone numbers by verbal commands. You go thru a voice promt to set up and talk back to the ladys voice to store. It can store like 30+ names.

I like stored 20+ names from my cell phone while in Houston traffic.

Also you can use the volume control to make softer or if you have the AC running high you can hear the other party better.

Also the people I talk to none yet complain about a scratchy / faint voice on my side while talking. Also the wife can chime in the conversation when she is riding shotgun and the other party can hear fine.

I guess this is because the omni directional mic on the top of the rear view mirror.

On the receiver it shows the signal strength of the phones antenna and if it is to low to make a call the lady will say "Phone Signal Strength Weak" .

Had to purchase a new cell phone and be careful as any PDA / windows based phones will not work. I went round & round and ended up with a Motorola that works flawlessly.

The only 2 downfalls I have is there is a delay to connect the bluetooth to the receiver.

Say I just press say redial on my phone by the time the phone connects thru the bluetooth the other party is saying "Hello Hello Hello" because of the pause, But this is not the RB4 as my friends Land Rover has the same problem.

Also if say I am filling up for gas and I have my phone on my belt if a incoming call comes in I need to jump in the cab to press the "U-connect" button.

Though I never tried to just answer the phone the regular way. Maybe I like to here the female repeat herself "Press U-Connect To Answer" :-laf

Would I get one in my next truck, Hell Yes.

Uconnect

I have a 2005 that when i orderd it , uconnect was on hold. I order it though parts, and it works great. Wouldn't be without it. Denny

I have it (factory installed) and think every car should have it. I am keeping the factory radio because of it. That is an important thing to note - there is a bus line between the Uconnect module and the radio, so as of right now I don't think there is any way to keep the Uconnect functionality with and aftermarket head unit. I am still trying to figure out how to connect aux. inputs to the factory HU as the Uconnect uses the CD changer input. I think I found the location of a plug behind the pass. seat, but have not verified it yet.

How is the noise level while driving?

I've got an '03 with a Nokia phone and aftermarket hands free. It's plugged into the radio which mutes when a call is made. Speakers handle the output, small mic next to the mirror for talking. The only drawback is the background and road noise while on a call. I tested by calling myself at home and leaving a message. Road/background noise makes it tough to hear the conversation.

Just curious if it's as bad in later models or the Blue tooth?

TP

I wonder if it would be possible to install the controller in the factory position in the overhead console?

Glad to here some people have added it, could not find a truck with it so will have to go through the dealer service area at about 400 bucks, ouch.

Not so good to hear it does not work with PDA. I am getting the Treo 650 with bluetooth and plan to use it. How did you find out it would not work with a PDA based phone??

Still works fine!

Is your system the add on system? Did you install it yourself or did the dealer put it up in the console?

Not to seem pessimistic, but what is fine? Do incoming calls mute the radio automatically just like normal and ask if you would like to answer? It appears you have the non-factory installed Uconnect (although I'm not sure - I thought all the Rams with Uconnect got the rearview mirror setup). Does that system connect to the stock radio through the CD changer port like the factory installed system does? How does the Uconnect interface with your aftermarket HU? I would be really interested in any details in how you got that to work.

My Uconnect was put on after I bought my new truck. I order it from Mopar. It works just like it was on there from the factory. The only diff is that my button to talk is on the dash.

when I get a call , I just push the button on the dash and the radio automatically turns down and you talk. My sound does'nt come from the radio, but from it own speaker under the dash. When your call is done, the radio comes back on. I have a 2005 jeep with factory Uconnect and they both work great. Denny

Has anybody tried getting the factory uConnect mirror and related stuff? That would be good, I'd do it then. Don't want the tacked on mopar thing.

edit: Which reminds me... talking to Dodge parts guys is a pain in the arse. They can't find anything without your VIN. So if your VIN doesn't show the uconnect mirror, it will be a miracle in itself if they can get you the part number.
