The last time I saw a U-Haul trailer behind a CTD he was in the decelaeration lane on the highway.

The first time I saw it he was in the hammer lane with the pedal burried on the floor.

I guess he saw 45 once on the way up and once on the way down.

I believe th 45 mph is for legal reasons to protect U-Haul.

They actually have some nice trailers particularly the 6x12 tandem. It rides and tows well.

I don't like the fact that they do not provide a spare tire. That is why I have seen many of them on the Alaska Hyw. on 3 wheels and a wadded up rim. They are heading to the next town. That can be a problem as the towns are 250 -300 miles apart. .

The 6X12 tows real nice... . at 70! Real stable and comfortable.

Check them out real carefully after you get them. The yard guys generally suck. Of course they don't get paid well either.

I looked under the trailer and the bolt holding the front spring eye to the trailer frame was missing the nut and backed half way out.

There is no incentive for the Uhaul yard to fix problems. They have to pay. If it breaks down on the road it is a corporate problem. the local doesn't pay.

Reminds me of the poetic justice I received last weekend on our trip back to Tampa from Pensacola. We were rollin' along at 68-70mph on I-10 when we came upon slower traffic. It was a motor home with a couple of cars and a U-haul truck pulling a 1500 Ram on a car transporter bringing up the rear of the pack. It was clear for a long way behind us so I pulled out to pass on a long uphill while we had our momentum up. We were almost to the rear of the Ram on the trailer when the driver swerved in front of us so hard that his Ram/trailer swayed and fishtailed. I hit the brakes and cussed as we slowed to 52 mph up the hill behind this jerk. Of course the motorhome (probably Cummins powered) maintained his speed of maybe 62-65mph cruise and lead a line of cars up and over the hill in the right lane while I was stuck behind A/H. We finally got where we could pass him and a few miles later we stopped at a rest area for a stretch. When we left it wasn't ten miles down the road that we passed the idiot again. This time beside the road with his Ram off the trailer and one of the trailer tires all mangled up in the fender. A/H was kicking the fender trying to accomplish something. We've laughed about it all week. Stop to help or lend a cell phone? I return favors. I wouldn't P on his head if his eyes were on fire. :D :-laf :-laf :-laf

Well, i didn't listen to my own advise last weekend when I moved. I needed the trailer fast, so I rented the U-Dont-Haul 6x12 tandem enclosed. When I picked it up, everything looked ok. By the time I loaded it up and got to my destination, the left front wheel was black and the paint was bubbling. Not caring because it was not my trailer, I started to drive back to drop it off. Now anyone farmiliar with Rte 2 in Cambridge/Arlington, MA, knowns the arlington hill. Well, I'm going down the hill at about 50mph, when I look and see the trailer tire/wheel/spindle passing me. About another four miles and I drop the trailer off. The lot guy wasn't thrilled that I didn't stop to pick up the wheel. i told him I wan't happy that the thing broke.

I rented a uhaul car hauler last summer and it was by for the nicest piece of uhaul equipement that I have ever seen. Brand new. Towed like a dream ( actually I did not pull it as I had a bigger heavier trailer behind the cummins but it did fine at 70+mph. On the other hnad I have seen uhaul trailers with no wiring when picking them up and they look like tey were used in a demo-derby.

I am moving this weekend and went with ryder truck and car hauler. I alway like their stuff better but they don't rent trailers without their trucks.

Car-hauler

Anyone know if U-haul or someone makes and rents a car hauler trailer large enough to haul my '95 RAM. The car haulers I saw at U-haul where not long enough to fit my truck and only had a 4K weight limit.

The only ram I have seen on a uhaul trailer was a 1500 regular cab short box and it was close. I don't think they what big trucks on their trailer they would probably make you use a tow dolly. I think I have seen a ryder trailer with a cummins dodge on it but ryder will not rent just the trailer:rolleyes:

Does anybody recomend a company that rents good trailers. I have to deliver a Caddy to Fla. from CT next week and don't want any problems getting there (it's not my car). I have never used U-haul but until I read this thread I had considered it.

So I was at uhaul a couple hour ago picking up a couple matris bags and looking around the lot it was obvious why they say on 45mph. Most of the trailers looked like duct tape was the majority of their structure.

CTram, you probably need to look at local welding shops and trailer dealers for a quality rental and plan on a round trip tow. Some of the local guys rent nice trailers but only for return to them and they tend to have surge brakes on them to eliminate the issues with wiring on the vehicles. For one way towing you are looking at uhaul pretty much. Or you could always make friend with some one who owns a trailer:D

I concur with the comment regarding them as U-don't-haul! I rented one a few weeks ago and found out that the hitch clamp was able to work itself loose! I found this out traveling down the road with the trailer swinging back and forth perpendicular to the truck by one safety chain:mad: Luckily I was able to dodge all the cars on the road with it and get it stopped.

hey Adam looks like a great rental place but are they growing:rolleyes: they don't seem to have stores is any of the states I start or finish in. And the closest store to CTram is in Virginia and that is no short hop from Ct.

This is definitely a business oportunity as no one likes uhaul and they, for most of us, are the only option. i would thin if Rent-X expanded they could take over most of the trailer business in the country.

RentX

Ted Constantine

I thought that they were everywhere we must have 6 or 7 stores with in 30 miles radius.

There was a rental company called Scotties and I think RentX bought them out. . I rented a Tandem for the weekend and was quoted $88. 50 plus tax and when I returned it only cost $73. 97 out the door!!

I applied for an IT job at Rent-X last fall at the corporate HQ in Denver. I didn't get the job, but I was impressed with the way that they run their organization. They are really focused on customer service. I haven't considered renting trailers from them, but will next time.

When I move a couple of weeks ago, I rented an enclosed 7 1/2 x 14 trailer from Parker Trailer Sales in Parker CO. I think it is a used trailer that they rent out until they sell it. It was a great trailer. Very clean, towed great, and much bigger than anything U-Haul has. Service was great too. I picked it up Friday afternoon, returned it Monday morning, for a one day rental fee.

Thanks for all of the input, I'll have to check with some of the local shops tomorrow and see what they have to offer.

So any of you Denver area guys know if there is a rental place here which has trailers large enough to place a full size RAM 2500 on??

Reason I ask is I have a 2002 on order. I hear the best way to break-in the the engine is to take a long road trip hauling something heavy. Well I don't have a trailer or anything heavy to tow. I thought if I could find a car hauler trailer large enough for my '95 to fit on I could take a long 1 or 2 day road trip with the new 2002 truck. How much weight would you guys recommend for towing to help facilitate engine break-in? Would my idea of towing my '95 on a trailer even be enough weight to make it worthwhile?
