I'm curious what people are seeing for life expectancy on front axle u-joints. I've got it all apart now doing ball joints. U-joints are original and have 97K on the truck. They appear to be tight and in good condition so I'm thinking that maybe I can just put the old ones back on.

Should I replace them now while it is all apart or should they last for a lot longer than 97K?

60,000 miles I had my rear U-joint physically crack. Very strange. The whole truck would shake because of it.

Mine look fine on my 3rd gen, But the transfercase and center uj joint have been splattering grease under the truck. the rear on is fine. I have plans tomorrow to get them replaced at the dealer I hope.

Kinda of a crap shoot. I traded complete differentials with a guy. My rig had 162K on it when we swapped. His had 135K. Both of his were trash. Too my knowledge mine were still fine.

When I replaced them I got the cheaper (less warranted) u joints. Why? because they have grease fittings. The more expensive (1 year warranty) is factory sealed. If you do your own maintainance and remember to grease 'em them should out live the sealed units.

Mine are still going good with 180k on them. However if I had it apart and they had 100k on them I would probably change them out.

Since they are a PITA to get to, I would go ahead and replace them with a set from Quad4x4 or some other reputable shop. My left one went at 98k and the right one is going out now at 101k. Just be careful not to ding the shaft seal or it will leave a puddle everywhere like my left side does, du-oh!

I second that!

Now is a good time to consider the SFB Boots too.
