Pilot bearing and pressure plate are PART of POWER-TRAIN. DISC is the ONLY wear item. If fine print is read about power-train. On 3/36 basic CALIPERS are covered. PADS are NOT. So are a lot of other little brake parts etc. Pads and clutch disc's are only wear items. I have WRITTEN up the failure on a clutch as a PRESSURE plate problem and let the customer BUY a disc and PAY a little labor like . 5 to R&R the flywheel and customer paid for flywheel machining and NOTHING else. :D its ALL in the PEN sometimes. And knowing how to write the failures ect. It DOSEN"T always TAKE a D. C. rep to figure out how to TAKE CARE of a CUSTOMER. :eek:or the pilot bearing came apart same deal.

picked up the truck today. I had asked them to keep the ujoint so I could see it. 2 ends were dry, on one of them there was looked like a plug of dried lube that was stopping more lube from coming down into the cap.

Mine was the middle joint. guys that have had failures, what did yours look like? what was the problem and which one was it? What was your build date?

It seems the only failures reported here so far took place above 50,000 miles. I wonder if there are more failures coming when more guys hit this mileage

WHamby or robobx, have either one of you taken your used UJ to a drive line shop for measurement and cross reference yet. I would sure like to carry one in the truck for long distance runs through the middle of nowhere. Especially after reaching 50K miles. Two sealed UJs on my Y2K failed early as well, one at 38K and one close to 50K.

Briman see above post for possible aftermarket u joint

rbattelle

You would be suprised what you can do with a piece of wood, a hammer, and a 3/4 inch socket. You can beat the u joint out without damaging the yoke. Of course the socket doesn't look very good anymore. I used to have a 75 ford with super swampers and 390 with 425 horses I could snap the ears clean off of a u joint so I got pretty good at replacing them except then I had the necessary tools and a spare u joint with me at all times

robobx

One ear on mine was completely dry and the needle bearings were powder.
