I agree that U Joints are part of the power train. Lets face it if the Ujoints were not there there would be no power to the wheels. :) I've always been very wary of anything dealers say especially regarding warrenty related work. Next person with a blowen U joint should raise the roof, especially if the total mileage is under 70K. JMO.

They HAVE a BOOK to go to for REFERENCE! On gas motors WATER-PUMPS are NOT. But the drivshaft and related components ARE. I don't think water pumps are on diesel either. Just a example. Everything the DEALER needs to KNOW is in a REFERENCE book THEY just need to LOOK instead of GUESS or ASSUME.

The same dealer that gave me 2 incorrect ujoints would not verify the torque for me because they said quote "we don't know because we haven't done one yet" . My ass do they think I don't know they have a manual like everybody else. They are the same ones that wouldn't cover it under warranty. They are Sunflower Dodge in Olathe, KS. I am glad I paid $126 instead of letting them fix it. My trunck would probably still be there waiting on the correct part. At least now I can go home today. This just pi$$es me off in general. If I had been at my home dealer I would have had it covered. On the other hand the guys at Speedway Dodge in Lansing, KS were very helpful because they had the part, it was right, and when asked to verify the torque he said sure let me just go ask one of the service guys.

when it went bad did it start as a shudder on take off?

mine started shuddering yesterday, then I went to pull away from a light and it felt like the ds was a single rotor on a heli! sitting idling it's fine, let off the clutch and wow what a vibe!

I have 53,000 miles

That sounds like a u-joint robobx, from a dead stop would feel like you were on small stutter(speed) bumps, then would smooth out at 20 to 30 mph.

Larry

this was smoothing out by 1600 rpms in 2nd gear. didn't feel anything until I gave it throttle. always gone by 1600. until now, just massive vibrating. 1st or 2nd gear as soon as the clutch is let off, and under acceleration.

still sound like u joint?

Thanks!!!!!

Yep, leave off accel. , and no vibration, much worse if pulling a load. Check them out!! Mine was just aft of center carrier.

While I'm not surprised their parts department and service writers suck, Sunflower has the only tech I would ever let touch one of my trucks. His name is Chris Papa and he's top notch.

2 dealers are telling me that it's not covered and one is telling me it is. The one that entered my VIN into the computer said it is, "it's part of the properller shaft, and that's covered"

The other two that said no said powertrain is only internally lubricated parts...

Well last time I checked a u joint was interally lubricated:confused:

I may call DC and ask for reimbursment. D90BOY I am sure they have at least on good tech there but the parts dept. is ??? Also I should be back in KC in a few weeks maybe week could get together for a cold one or a coke which ever you prefer.

robobx it definitly sounds like a u joint.

Well its NOT really internally lubricated. But the drive shaft is PART of power-train. Actually the pressure plate and throwout bearing/flywheel/pilot bearing are covered also! JUST NOT the clutch DISC!

Chrysler reimbersed me for getting my front shaft rebalanced. I recieved a check for $45.

I looked it up in the warrenty information book that came with all our trucks.

page 10 4x4 covered under the 7/70,000

"transfer case and all internal parts;transfer case control module and shift mode motor assembly;axle housing and all internal parts;axle shafts;axle shaft bearings;drive shafts assemblies (front and rear);drive shaft center bearings;universal joints and yokes;disconnect housing assembly;seals and gaskets for the listed components only. "

copied verbatim.

so that said my truck is being towed by road side assistance to a dealer that is covering the u joint:D

With my mileage I would have had to pay a $100 deductible for it even if they had of fixed it. I would rather fix it myself as long as I am capable for a $26 price difference. I am still going to call DC and ask for some sort of reimbersement. I appreciate all of the replies and help on this issue though. I went to my local parts store at home this morning and took them my old u joint. He matched it by measuring in about 2 minutes. He had one in stock so we visually compared them. The u joint he had was greasable. Sizewise they were exact except for the middle on his was a little thicker probably because it was greasable. I don't think it would have caused an issue though. He wanted $20. 50:cool: . It would be worth trying if someone ever needs to replace there u joint out of warranty. It was precision brand and the part # was 351. If your trucks calls for Mopar part # S102157AB this would be worth looking at.

Good thread!

I have a couple questions:

-Is it true that the pilot bearing is covered under 7/70? Certainly the clutch plate is not... what about the pressure plate?

-WHamby, how the heck did you remove the U-Joint in a hotel parking lot? Do you carry around a press with you?
