TORQUE THIS

I just replaced the u-joint behind the Carrier Bearing on Tuesday and it took Auto Zone 3 times to get it right.

Rear Drive shaft u-joint ( Brute Force PN# 2-0054BF @$18. 00

Best I can do.

Good Luck

Cliff

For the center bearing on my 6 speed 2500 the part number on the Dodge Stealer receipt is 4773014 ($96). The part number I have for a sealed Spicer U joint is NS 5-801X ($23), I don't know if that is a Spicer number or not

This has been a popular subject of late. Many folks are of the opinion that the factory U-joints are the best because they are thicker and therefore stronger than greasable U-joints.

My question: Does anyone know where the factory joints can be purchased other than a Dodge dealer? I haven't tried Mopar4Less yet... .

Tom

Tom the (Brute Force PN# 2-0054BF) are not greasable and look to be every bit as strong as the stock ones.

Cliff

Ive put few U joints in,never kep the boxes or part #s though. I use the mopar/spicer joints only without grease fittings.

Torque This, How many miles on your truck? I am curious because the dealer is replacing my rear drive shaft under warrantee due to play in the carrier bearing and a dry middle U-joint. I have just over 31k on mine and am wondering if u-joint/ bearing wear is common and if I'll be having to do the same work as you in another 30K! Any one else out there experiencing driveline wear? Thanx- frank.

fkovalski,

I have 33K on the clock. Carrier is shot, u-joints are still good. ToolManTimTaylor had his driveshaft done probably around the same mileage. His carrier are u-joints were TOAST!!!! I am going to do it myself, NO DEALER!!!!

Yeah how funny is that one. Mark was there when I pulled it out of my truck and there was about 1/2 inh + axial movement on the carrier and the U~Joints were worn thru the caps

(Suuuuuuuure the dealer would replace that one for me  god just trying to get a center cap for the dually was next to impossible when I drove it off the lot when it poped off)

But yeah Both trucks are White 3500's with the same mileage failures... ... ... . Hmmmm could it be the paint? Mark It was 410. 00~Ish as I saw a withdral in august of 02 for 420. 00 what date I dunno but if I remember it was late August. The shaft was under your last name as it is written all over mine.

Funny thing was that after the whole thing was rebuilt as an ASSEMBLY <------ Key word here folks you can see where they Dynamicly balanced the unit on their lathe type machine via weights. Does that mean that the shaft set was A: Phased wrong from the factory? B: NEVER Balanced in the first place? I DUNNO

I consider myself lucky to have my factory U joint last 73K miles. I got a vibration at 65-75 mph. With all the plowing, towing, hot rodding, and drag racing I do(dont forget the once-twice a yr sled pulling too). I feel that was excellent service life. It cost about 58 bucks for a new one at the dc dealer. I hammer my truck pretty hard IMo,I thought I would break it by now(4wheel lauches at 20psi boost with 4. 10's = 4 wheel burnous with wheel hop).

I've got 114,000 miles only replaced one u-joint

on front driveshaft at the yoke. Rear shaft and carrier bearing are still tight I just checked all joints the carrier in drivetrain.

After just rolling over 144,000 on the CTD, I have had a vibration, above 35mph, both loaded and empty since day 1.

Anyone able to give me an easy way to check the carrier bearing assy for wear/replacement?

Have towed a lot of miles with a heavy 5'er and DTT trans setup.

Thanks,

DC Miller

I just spoke to Scott at massdiesel last night, he said something about putting a shim between the frame and carrier. You might want to give him a call.

TQT,

A buddy of mine with a 97 had to replace his carrier bearing a couple of months ago. He did the search and ended up buying the carrier from Dodge. Brought the shaft with old carrier still attached and new carrier in hand to a local parts strore with machine shop. They pressed the old one off and new one on in minutes for short money. Easy done. I think he did ujoints while it was out as a PM. His truck has somewhere in the high 70s mileage on it.

I had my center bearing and 2 u-joints replaced under warranty at about 38000 mi. I now have 77000mi and the factory items are starting to make noise and viabrate again. I am probably going to south shore bearing in quincy and get good stuff with grease fittings.
