Towing across flatlands earlier, 13K trailer on behind, cruise on, very little power being applied, and the transmission just lets go. (It's an 06 3500 with Goerend TC and VB, 5" exhaust, and intake). The weird part was that as I pulled off the road, at first the motor was revving freely, like in N, but then it suddenly stalled and wouldn't even turn over to re-start... like it was bound up... ??? It was dripping transmission fluid out of the front housing, too.

Any thoughts on what might have happened (the dealer won't get to it until next week)? Maybe the input shaft broke and took out the TC causing it to bind up on the engine side?

Not much to bind in there, the input shaft will break on the skinny end, it's more of a twist than a break. My be a electronic thing on a 06, but my 04 still turned over and started.

Don't be cheep! Get the hardend shafts all the way through.

Did you try and get Dave on the phone? If it is the TC it at least has a 100,000 mi warranty. Maybe he would credit that TC (if that is what failed) and some of the VB into a new trans with the goodies that you want.

I would call dave goerend first and see what he has to say. I have been running his VB&TQ problem free for the last 2 years. coobie:)

I would say its your flexplate, It is the weakest link then the input shaft. When I broke my flexplate it made a nasty sound when starting the truck. It twisted the center out. Probably took out your TC too since there was nothing to hold the end up any more.

Doesn't sound like a warranty issue, U play, U pay!

Thanks, guys. I much appreciate the thoughts. It's looking like something at the back of the transmission per the dealer- they're still diagnosing but they're saying it's nothing related to the triple disk Goerend TC or VB, or to normal operation in general, just some weird glitch they've never seen before (I was very upfront about the mods- for those few of you who like to pile on to others hard luck with pharisitical warranty comments). Anyway, this seems to be a very weird and unique break. I'll update for others' future reference when I find out what it is for sure!

mlewis, thanks for the sympathy- I hate sitting on the side of the road!!

Wow, a warranty parasite, that sounds bad. Maybe you can get a pill on one of those pharmacy sites for that.

The only things I was thinking was how did the fluid get to the front? Why won't the engine turn over, what is stopping the driving side of the converter?

It is either the flexplate or input shaft, no glitch at the rear of the transmission is going to make fluid run out of the front and bind up the engine.

Sorry for your loss, but really you should have known better then to run an automatic without a transmission cooler... ... they just can't take the heat.

Maybe you can get one for the rebuilt of performance trany you'll replace it with? Trust me I have been there and done that, try a Super Cooler... . they work.

Maybe with your '97, but my '06 pulling 14K# can't get the temps in the transmission hot line going to the cooler over 180*. The 3rd and 4th gear TC lockups really work.

I don't think transmission temps have anything to do with the problem.

Good luck Toy Haulin'

"you should have known better then to run an automatic without a transmission cooler"

Every automatic has a transmission cooler from the factory and Cummins autos have two.
