Did the routine service to my transmission tonight and was very pleased with what I was seeing until I dropped the pan all the way and found a 1. 5" long piece of snap ring stuck to the magnet. This does not give me the warm and fuzzies... I have an ATS converter and modified valve body along with their deep pan. The transmission operates perfectly and is clean as a whistle inside. By the way this is a 2004. 5 2500 4x4 with 79K on the odometer.

I have been using Amsoil since 15K in the gearbox.

Anybody have any ideas of what the heck is going on here? am I headed for a disaster?

Thanks, Mark

Someone may chime in with a different opinion, but I would recommend taking that piece of metal to a 'trustable' transmission guy, and getting his take on what happened. Or possibly post a pic of that part, and I`m sure a transmission guy here will take a look.

I wouldnt drive it too much until you know whats going on.

Hmm, that reminds me. . its about time to drop my pan... YAY! lol

A full ATS transmission put an old transporter friend of mine out of business. Against my advice he had a full ATS rebuild. He experienced so many breakdowns, lost so many loads he had already picked up, and missed so many loads during downtimes he had to file bankruptcy and had his truck repossessed.

Generally, that ring is out of the OD unit. Can't remember if its a retainer or spacing ring. Either way you have a problem in the making and it will, as always, show up at an inopportune time. Better find a shop to address the issue before it trashes the whole unit.

I wouldn't drive it and would have it towed to someone that could pull the transmission and find where it came from. When the rest of the retaining ring comes out you may tear something up.

I'm thinking the increased line pressure from the modified valve body may have something to do with the breakage. At 79K your transmission most likely needs refreshing and time for a up grade.
