UHaul car trailer/VE shop charge?

Trying to find the best option here. Got a modified VE pump in Northern Ohio, about 336 miles away. First option is, if I have it shipped to me, I can wait til spring for warmer weather to install it (non-heated garage here) or pay a local diesel shop to install it. Second option would be rent a UHaul car trailer, tell them I'm hauling a Ford Ranger, pay for the insurance on it, which I'm told covers everything on it, haul my 89 W250 on it with the 91 W250 as the tow vehicle. The 89 will be slightly over the weight limit of the UHaul 2 axle car trailer. Then if something happens to the trailer, park the 89 somewhere, take the trailer to the local UHaul shop get another trailer, be on my way. Reason I want to do this, GL and I will be installing the VE pump on my 89. Since I would be trailering it, I wouldn't have to worry about the 300k mile VE taking a dump on me in route 300 miles back home. I'm wanting to hear from anyone with experience with UHaul trailers, whether the trailer would last with a HD truck on it, not sure how much it weighs. Also what the average shop charge is to remove a VE and install another? Thanks.
 
On the uhaul

No doubt in my mind that the uhaul will carry the truck if the tires are good. I have seen some really shabby tires on them of late. I have seen their trucks and trailers beside the road a bit too often.



Surely someone close has a good trailer. I would definitely loan mine but way too far. Changing the pump isn't such a big job. Maybe you should ask the charge at the local garage and just have the pump shipped.

Have the pump shipped and buy a kerosene torpedo heater... I use one and it blasts me out of the garage in about 1/2 hour.



If the trailer is a dual axle I wouldn't worry too much about hauling your truck on it. The weight ratings are really conservative anyway... . you should be able to go 50% over without any problem. I'd worry more about whether the truck will fit on it.

And like James said... make sure the tires are good and pumped up like they should be.

The truck probably wont fit on the u haul trailer,it may squeeze on if its a reg cab. But the wheels are too far forward,the heavy Cummins should help with that. The running gear on most u-hauls is 5ton (6 lug) with surge brakes. I recently towed one 1100miles and it was fine,but i only had 3000lbs on it. The tired were only rated 4 1800lbs each. Here's a shot of it,Btw the max speed posted on the fender was 45mph, I dont think we went under 70 the whole time,the tires were brand new,but way underinflated ,and 3 tires were ready to fall off, when I went over the lugs and i dont think i would have made it home if i didnt.

I pulled a load up from Southern FL. Good thing I did a pre trip on that unit. it needed it. Tire psi low,lug nuts loose and lights did not work.



Bill, I heard through the grape vine that your experimental VE found it's way onto another member's truck. He'd like to give it back to you but is currently laying low due to a recent investigation by the State Highway Partol. Something to do with mutiple speed violations on the Interstate ???? I dunno... ... ... .



It's just what I heard.



The EPA and Greenpeace is also filing charges.

You're worried about the pump that will be installed taking a dump? :eek: Maybe I misunderstood your post.



I don't know about around you, but there are places around here to rent a real car trailer as long as you are coming back to thier store. One heavier then a u-haul. Try and find one of those. Or you could use one of those toters and pull the rear drive shaft. Then you would not have to worry 'bout the weight. I have used a toter before and it worked pretty well.



You need to move up here, that way you could use my garage, and my trailer. :D



Dunno about the shop charges. I do agree with Jay on the torpedo heater. They can be bought for under $200 for 60,000 BTU, and you can get mulitfuel ones now. Mine is running in the garage right now on DIESEL! ;)

Ah here we go, now my VE is gone... What states highway patrol was it? I was gonna pretrip it good, take it to my house, air all tires up to spec, put the impact on the lug nuts, if I was to go the UHaul route. As far as buying a torpedo heater or the like, with my stacks I can't get into the garage, which I think I'm gonna try to fix, redo the stack job, make it so I can unclamp the stacks at their base so I can get into the garage. Right now, they are welded to the box steel direct. I measured the truck, and accoording to UHauls site and the TDR archives I can get a reg cab longbed pickup on it. UHaul says less than or equal to 133" wheelbase, mine is 131". Outside to outside tire width no greater than 79. 25", mine is ~78-79" with 265/75 16's. As far as road trips, heck I'm sure me and Greenleaf could round up a few Buckeye TDR members to possible have a shin dig or stand around and watch dig. Mudcat, thanks for the offer, I might think about going down there too.
 
I would rent a propane heater from UHaul before I would rent the CAR trailer with bad bearing, bad tires and bad wiring - They use to have a pretty good maintenance guy but they needed to cut costs and fired me :D
 
There is no way I'd get me another one of them kerosene/diesel fueled unit's. I lived with one for too long and, so they say, I have never been right since then!! ROF LOL



Too much fumes. I now have the LPG torpedo heater and all is well. Other than the stink'n p$r$i$c$e of LP ... ... ... ... AUGHGGGG!! What do they think it's made from?? GOLD DUST!!



Your lungs and heart will thank you for it though... ..... unless you smoke two packs of cigs a day. I luv the smell of burned (or unburned) diesel , for about 30 seconds.



Bill, you told me you'd be installing a wood burner. More work than LP but it's user friendly too.



Bill's truck needs a pump transplant. I could have the local Hospital ship it over in one of them mini vans with the cooler... ... ... . packed in ice... ... :) :) :)

Thats exactly why I have never purchased a torpedo heater. Then as a part of my job working on equipment on the customers cite-and winter time on its way- my boss let me buy a torpedo heater for work. Well, I use it in my larg one car garage- it has run for several hours today, and no fumes in the garage, and warm enought to work in a light sweatshirt- at 0* outside. I am very impressed with this new torpedo. It is much quiter, more efficient, and a lot less fumey then the old ones.



Back on track-good luck with the u-haul trailer and the pump install, Bill. You guys going to have wrench day next year? Going to have to come see the modded pump in action.

I think you could get away with a u-haul trailer. We put a 56 International 4x4 on one and it fit good. Just about max width and length, but fit good. I would think it'd be ok if you do a pre-trip on it. My dad rented a tandem axle box trailer last month and I had to repair some wiring on it 'cause it was blowing the marker light fuse :rolleyes: . He towed it to Idaho and back on a "local rental" with no problems.

I've seen a u-haul trailer on the side of the road here with a full size Chevy Blazer on it, and two wheels missing (broken wheel studs).



If you have to rent, go rent an equipment trailer for moving bobcats & the like. Sure, they're heavy. They also hold up to just about anything.

Does the Uhaul you want to rent have surge brakes? If so what you are towing (truck and trailer) I think would out weigh what you are towing it with. It might be unsafe and hard to stop that thing.

Good advice... . my son bought an old trailer several years ago that was for that purpose... . Over the years he has used and abused it and it still survives. :eek:
 
When I sold my "82, I used my boss' car trailer. The truck JUST fit on there. Edge to edge, all around. Had to remove the ramps and toss them in the bed of the truck, because they weren't able to come up high enough to be chained.

You should have no problem hauling the pickup on a UHaul trailer. I had the adaptor between the transmission and t-case strip out, and had to haul it with my ex's pickup. Told them it was a 2wd F150... ... It was a tight fit, and the back end hung over a bit. Only problem was the north end of Monument Hill with a 6. 9/C6 Ford.



Your pickup weighs right at 6000#. Or the 92 W250 was 5975 with 1/2 tank of fuel. Certified scale at the feed store.

Excellent. I drove my 78 W150 over by a UHaul dealer the other night and 'parked' next to one of their trailers. Didn't have a tape measure on me, but eyeballed it, and it looked like it would fit, maybe half the rear tire hanging off, center of the rear axle though, looked like it would be on the trailer. Now, how big a tire will their front straps fit? Tire size is 265/75/16, I hear is same height as 235/85's, just a little wider. I have an HD ratchet strap setup I would try to loop around one of the trucks axles and around the frame of the trailer for extra holddown. This is probly gonna be the route I select, instead of having the pump shipped. Now only thing is my 91 doesn't have a hitch at all, me being cheap, was thinking about removing the class 5 hitch from the 89, and installing it on the 91. But then if the 91 breaks down, I either have no truck to pull it, or would have to swap hitches again on the side of the road. Hmm, how much does a HD hitch cost??
 
Your tires should work. The International 4x4 I mentioned had 235/85r16s on it and they fit. You will be at the limit on the strap though, but there should be enough to be safe. If you use more tie downs, all the better.

bill, if you come through ohio let me know. ill meet up with you somewhere. hitches arent very expensive. i dont think i have ever paid over $100 for a class 4. but there is no need to go cheap and take chances. im sure a uhaul will do it, but you should be able to find heavier trailers around.
