No, not me. My injection pump on the 1990.

She let go a high pressure head seal the very same day I completed the front end replacement. Won't start with out "prime time" and generally makes a big mess.

@ 317,000 miles one would wonder if it's age or the new ULSD. I'm thinking old age, but am aware many are experiencing leakage of pump seals.

Time for tune-up/reseal.

Probably a little bit of both. Yes, ulsd is doing nothing good, but the newest first gen is now 14 years old too. Actually a pretty good run for rubber seals to last 17 years in a high pressure high heat situation.

Hope it's high miles and not age.

There was an 89 bus at PTombs house this Sat. that had a pump head leak. 300,000 plus miles. Maybe Pete can give details.

... yup... I'm thinkin' a pump 're-seal' will fast become a 'typical maintainence item' for our old rigs, for sure because of age/mileage and most likely eventually the ULSD.

But also, 'since it's open'... a real good 'excuse' for other pump tweaks, ja? :-laf

M2, like he needs an excuse? :-laf

The bus is leaking at the base of the head (i think that's what its called) where it meets the body of the pump. I'm not sure if that's high pressure or not. It just drips a little, but constant. Jgolden was ALL excited about that puppy! ;) :D

Hey, that bus is the diesel powered version of a celeocanth. Not to mention it has the same JohnDeere/ Oshgosh/Freightliner chassis as my rig. I think the"born on" date is the same.

And then to find that,Dave, the proud owner has all the parts info... .

No more glassy stares at the parts counter. "Sure we've got that. "

And the working magnetic retarder, cool.

the injection pump seals on my rotary pump on my john deere just went out after maybe a hundred hours of using ulsd granted the tractor is 41 years old but i just had the pump resealed in 2002 by bakers diesel in ogden. i am sure it wasnt anything bakers did but when it gets back from the pump place in salt lake i will ask them waht they thought caused the seals to go out so soon

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh..... really. I already had the pump top off to modify and remove some unwanted items. I guess I'll be resealing the pump top again as well.

Shops will tell you it's the fuel; oil companies and their goons (employees, same thing) will tell you old age. Whom does one believe? Let me see... ... a wing of the govt (or at least in cahoots to drop drawers and grab ankles when the EPA says so), or someone who actually works on fuel systems? I'd be curious to hear what caused yor JD pump failure, as well, considering it's only 5 years old. My money is on the fuel.

Do the new seals hold up or I guess a better question is are they supposed to hold up?

Or is this gonna be like my Seadoo... . rebuild the carb (pump) every spring??

Fresh seals will work perfect. The problem as I understand it is the old-school #2 had lots of sulpher and it is that sulpher that provided some of the lubricity for the pump seals, and, as I understand it, without that sulpher the old seals will tend to shrink a bit, maybe just enough to cause a leak. New seals will not have the sulpher issue and should never have a leak problem... that is until the fuel changes again...

i understood that the seals at least in the dodge pumps after around 2000 were the newer style seals is that right? because i had the pump resealed in 02. anyway hopefully the new reseal job will work ? all this has goten me rather worried as what to do for my 91 dodge cummins to keep the seals from leaking ? because in my bulk fuel that the i fuel the john deere and pickups out off has been double treated with stanadyne and the seals still went tits up

Not too long ago I saw Viton Hyd. Head seal kit someone put together on Ebay. Just that o-ring, a longer Hyd. Head bolt and a sleeve (pc. of plastic straw)to keep the new o-ring from rubbing on the bolt threads during installation. $9. 00 of course, plus shipping!

I checked McM-Carr but they don't have that size in Viton...

MM- it is actually the amount of aromatic compunds (and not sulfur) that affect the seals and cause them to shrink when introduced to the ULSD. Right idea, though.

The IP on Old Ugly is starting to leak, also. Any one know of a IP mechanic in the Denver area? How difficult is the reseal process? If I could get it down onto a bench, I would seriously consider tearing into it, myself, but not without some serious preparation and guidance from those in the know. GregH

MM, I heard or read that C. M. P. , in Denver, had been bought out and there were some unhappy customers since? Anyone with news, confirmation or refutation? GregH
