Water heater was still working!

What is your thought on using ULSD for home heating fuel? I got $1.00 off per gallon from Safeway that I need to use. I don't consider filling and emptying a 5 containers to save $25 dollars a big deal. I've already done it and currently have approximately a 10% ULSD/90% heating fuel mixture in the tank. Use or lose type thing.

Thanks,
John

As long as your home heating system uses furnace oil as it's regular fuel, and not stove oil, I see no problem.

We were on a job one year where the general contractor ended up having over 1000 gallons of off road fuel left over at the completion of the job. They were not local and could not take it with them. Myself and the construction manager of my company contacted a guy we knew that owns a gas station company and struck a deal with them. They would come with their tanker and draw the fuel from the site and dump it in their tank (they had previously delivered the fuel so they knew it was ok), and we split it in thirds. When it was all said and done I burned over 350 gallons of off road fuel through my furnace trouble free. There is virtually no difference between the two. I do notice in cold climates they tend to sell more #1 heating oil or at least a blend, so depending on where you live and where your tank is stored you may want to take that into consideration if burning large amounts, but with what little your talking about it shouldnt be an issue.

ULSD burner fuel is all that is available on Long Island. It burns cleaner than conventional fuel and does not leave behind the ash deposits typical of higher sulphur fuels. With a good burner, it should be almost as clean as natural gas.

I bet it burns cleaner, as ulsd is a cleaner fuel than K1 (but more expensive due to taxes).

Around here, SW Mo, K1 is only available in the hardware store in 1 and 5 gallon jugs. 1 gallon is $15, 5 gallon is $40. Diesel is easier to get and cheaper. My heater is over 40 years old and works well.

Now that is higway robbery!!

k1 is available at the pump at most gas stations here that sell diesel. If they sell off road, very good chance they will have K1. Even the Sheetz 30 miles from me sells K1 at the pump.
