What would be the optimum setup for diesel filtration. With the high price of a FASS and an even higher price of the airdog, I'm considering making my own setup. I'm thinking something along these lines. Tank... ... . Fuel/Water Seperator with heater... ..... 2 micron Filter... ... CP3. Does this sound like the logical order.

Thanks

If Fass or Airdog aren't in the budget for now then just get a 3 micron filter and put on your rig. I think the factory unit is 10micron which doesn't cut it and that's why so many of us have injector problems. You need the 3 micron. Since I went that route,... no problems. That's a cheap fix. Good luck.

Where do you get a 3 micron filter to fit in our trucks. I bought the filter package from genos, and that is what I've been using.

3 micron filter

I get mine from my local diesel shop. Not sure where he gets them. They're fleet guard so I'd think that most diesel shops would carry them.

Ryan, did you ever get the Davco installed on your truck? We run those on our over-the-road trucks, they work great, and absolutely NO problems with them.

No, if you read a ways into the thread I eventually decide on a Stanadyne unit that is MUCH MUCH smaller than the Davco. I still have the Davco, though, if I ever find a convenient place to mount it under the hood.

I guess I missed that part, sorry. They put a new davco on my work truck ('05 Freightliner/M2 Business Class w/MBE4000 450hp Mercedes Benz 14. 7l) And this thing is really small. It might be 10" tall. It also has a fuel heater.

BLACK PEARL,

Did you try http://www.fleetguard.com/fleet/en/customer_assistance/en_info_n_amer.jsp

You may look around as a number of truck shops are Fleetguard distributors. A couple of the Cummins Southern Plains locations here in north Texas carry Fleetguard in place of the Cummins badged filters. Personally I get all my Fleetguard product from a local International dealer due to their convenient location. If you have a PN of what you want PM me and I could dig up their phone number for you. I'm sure they'd ship to you.

Black Pearl... . That is exactly what I was looking at myself. They are a little tall though. I think about 16". I'm going to price one out when I get home.

A more passive option

This may sound off the wall but has anyone ever thought to filter the fuel pre tank. Assuming there is enough space between the filler cap and the tank, how large would a filter have to be to pump say 30 gal in 10 minutes to 2 microns with a gravity filter maybe adding a small pump pre or post filter?

Those FuelPro's are just REBADGED DAVCO filters! Save yourselves some money and buy a Davco from Ebay like I did. A new basic Fuelpro runs over $600!!!!!!

Beware: I spent a couple months trying to find a convenient place to mount the Davco unit under the hood and found NOTHING. Well, that's not entirely true. I think a Davco could be mounted in place of one of the batteries. Sometime in the future when I switch to a single 2100 amp Odyssey battery I will re-examine the possibility of installing the Davco.

Also beware the Davco uses 1/2 NPT inlet and outlet ports, so your fittings cost will be significantly higher.

It has been considered, and most people with auxilliary tanks run a filter between the aux. tank and the stock tank. Problem is, a major source of contaminants is the tank, lines, and the lift pump. So you're sending 2-micron filtered fuel to the LP, but it's adding some contaminants to the fuel it pumps which move along down the line to the CP-3.

In a "perfect" world, the filter would be the very last item prior to the injector. That's just not practical in this case.
