2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Under box fuel tanks

vssman, do you know what they used for mounting the tank? I'm assuming they had to custom make the mounting hardware but if you could get the details it would make my starting point much easier. Thank you for the input.

I don't remember. But I think you would be able to put (bolt) in a couple of cross braces in the frame rail and then attach the tank straps to those pinching the tank between the cross braces and straps.

on a GM I used threaded rod , through existing frame holes, with steel bar
under tank.

Crude yes, temporary install that never got changed. .

I have a 93 w350 dually, I put a AERO 60 gal underbed replacement tank way back when you couldn't find diesel on every corner. They are in Corona Ca. Still there and first chance I get to go down there, I'm putting there 75 gal underbed tank in my 07 drw LB. I'm selling the 93 and I've been tempted to take the tank out. Anyway, search Aero Tanks and I'm sure they could help you out.

Thanks for the info. The 75 gal tank will not fit under my truck but I will be checking out Northwest Metal Products. If I could get another 35 gal it would help me out a lot. If I have my exhaust modified so I can fit another tank on the frame I'll let you know how it goes.

RJWEST I had my truck back over to the exhaust shop and it looks like i will have to take the exhaust pipes under the frame rails to get them to the outside. Since I don't use my truck for "4 wheeling" and almost exclusively for towing equipment around I can probably get away with doing something like this. I wouldn't recommend it for anyone that uses there truck in the woods or for 4 wheeling. The pipes are still higher than the differentials or rear end but I know some people get fairly extreme in some of there activities. Has anyone out there ever mounted a tank on the right side? It looks like a person could use the same mounting straps that are on the original tank. Would like some input from someone that has tried something like this.

BRadtke: thanks for the info, while I was looking over the project, i realized
I run a Truck Camper, side exhaust may not be a good idea... .

Thinking about squeezing a 60 x18 x 4 in front of the camper. but only 18 gals.

SO back to the drawing board,
Hate to mount the spare on the front bumper ,ala 70's look, but I could go with a big square tank there...

Interested how the project works out,,,

BRadtke: Did some serious looking at the fuel tank in the 2002,

Can't use OEM on right side, The frame brace at the rear of the tank has a
curve where it meets the frame. The tank is notched to fit around it.
Notch is shaped different on inboard side, would interfere on right side,
Would need r&d to make it fit. .

Thanks for all the info, I think I'll just have to settle for the 50 gal replacement tank. Does anyone out there have one for sale that would fit a 94 standard cab with an 8' box?

Keep the Ideas coming. I enjoy reading your thoughts on this. I need more Fuel, Im tired of making special trips into town just for #2. And I need my entire bed, thats why I don't have a short box.



For moving the exhaust out side of the frame, have you considered sider pipes like the viper had? I thought of making a set that would double as step bars. Worried about how hot they would get, Although they would stay Ice free in the winter. Also could you heat the tank enough to bend it, so that it would clear the frame?



I should be able to get the tractor out of the shop tomorrow, then I'm going to slide under and scratch my head on this for a while.

McCram, I talked to my exhaust guy and he said that he would split my 4" pipe into 2 3. 5" pipes and have them come out in front of the factory tank and run down the outside of the frame and come out in front of my dulles. So in effect you would have side pipes but they would be under the body until they came out in front of the tires. This I thought would allow me to put another factory tank on the other side without losing the spot for my spare tire. However the factory tank is only 35 gal and so if I doubled that I'm at 70 gal for all my trouble and money. In my particular case My fuel gage has quit working properly so I have to drop the factory tank to fix it. Since I'll be going through all this work anyway I thought it would be just as well to put buy the 50 gal replacement tank and install it. that still leaves me with the option of putting the Northwest Metal Products 35 gal spare tire replacement tank in. I don't want to spend the $1000 plus dollars for that replacement. I guess however you slice it it's going to cost a lot of money to get 70 or 85gal carrying capacity. If you can come up with a cheaper way i"m all ears. I have gotten a lot of good ideas from people in the forum so I'm sure there are ways to do anything. Get back to me with any ideas you may have.
